Train River is a collective of amateur bluegrass musicians in Portland, OR led by guitarist/mandolinist Jeffree White. The repertoire includes traditional bluegrass numbers and fiddle tunes, along with more modern additions which have become standards -- tunes by Old & In the Way and Phish -- and some nonbluegrass surprises thrown in for fun and variety. Jeffree, like many other new bluegrass fans, discovered the music through the Grateful Dead and offshoot bands, and contemporary jamgrass bands. Jeffree brings his advanced picking skills, playful vibe, and love of learning and teaching music to the project.
Train River put together a trio for our outdoor anniversary feast. Jeffree & crew were responsive, helpful and delightful every step of the way! They tailored their musical choices to exactly match what I wanted for the event. They were prompt, polite, and good-natured from initial contact, through my amateur planning process, flawless during the several-hours event, and even sent a thank-you note afterward. We were so pleased, we are now thinking of ways to hire them again!
Price Range: $75 - $1200
What to Expect
We usually perform as a quintet -- guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, and upright bass -- but we can provide a band of any size. We have various sound systems to fit events and spaces (or can be completely acoustic!).
The music is fairly standard bluegrass, with flavors of country and jam-band music. We choose feelgood and funny songs, rather than the woe-is-me and love-gone-bad themed songs which make up so much of the genre.
We are self-sufficient, reliable, and personable, to make it easy and low-impact as possible for our clients.
