What to expect

Cat’s Corner offers lively, inclusive jazz and swing experiences that bring audiences together through music, dance, and cultural storytelling. Event planners can book professional performances, interactive swing dance lessons, tap or jazz showcases, and customized dance activations designed to engage guests of all experience levels. Whether you are looking for a dynamic stage performance, an icebreaker, or a memorable participatory activity, Cat’s Corner delivers an authentic, welcoming experience rooted in the rich heritage of jazz and Black vernacular dance.

About

Our mission is to build an inclusive community through Afro-American jazz and blues dances and music. To make this culture accessible to everyone, regardless of their identity or means. To support artistic creation, practice, and the sharing of this cultural heritage while respecting and honouring its origins.

Cat’s Corner has over 20 years of experience in teaching and promoting swing, jazz, blues, and tap dancing to a diverse, intergenerational audience. Our approach is experience-centered. Each person is guided to develop self-awareness and independence, so they can enjoy a joyful experience through dance.

We design artistic experiences and dance classes that are accessible to everyone. No experience required: our classes are structured and easy to follow, whether you’re dancing solo or with a partner. Our participatory activities strengthen team cohesion. Our programs can be tailored to any setting and budget. Let’s create a memorable experience together!

Additional booking notes

For dance performances and interactive workshops, we typically require a clear, safe dance floor or open space, a sound system with a microphone and music playback capability, and adequate lighting. For live music performances, additional audio equipment may be required and can be discussed with the event planner in advance. Cat’s Corner can adapt its technical setup to the venue and event format.

Influences and inspiration

Cat’s Corner is deeply influenced by the legacy of Black jazz and vernacular dance pioneers, whose creativity, musicality, and spirit of community shaped Lindy Hop. We are also inspired by Montréal tap and jazz elder Ethel Bruneau, whose work embodies the importance of preserving and passing on cultural lineage. Contemporary artists and educators who continue to connect dance, live music, history, and community also influence our approach. These influences guide Cat’s Corner in creating experiences that are joyful, accessible, culturally grounded, and respectful of the traditions from which jazz and swing dance emerged.
