Desiree Roots is well known in Richmond and throughout for her magnificent theatrical and vocal talent. She performs regularly in theatrical productions, concerts, festivals, workshops, and studios, as well as operatic, R&B, gospel and jazz genres. She was bitten by the theatre bug at age 13, and since that time has held leading roles in many productions. Desiree's latest performance was in the hit musical "Nunsense" at Riverside Dinner Theatre in Fredericksburg, VA and "Crowns" at Barksdale Theatre, which celebrated an extended run to sell out audiences at the Historic Empire Theatre. She was featured in a one-woman production, in which she wrote, entitled "Songs of Bessie Smith" and had the Nell Carter role in "Ain't Misbehavin" at Porthouse Theatre in Kent Ohio. Desiree recently had the honor of performing with the World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra during their East Coast tour. Her vocal stylings have also been heard on several episodes of "The Cosby Show" and "A Different World." A graduate of Virginia Union University, she has been the opening act for such internationally known performers as B. B. King, Kenny Garrett, Bobby Watson, Art Porter, Gerald Albright, Phyllis Hyman and Shirley Horne. In 2004, Desiree received the Theresa Pollack Prize for Excellence in the Arts as Best Vocalist in Virginia.
