Since the great highland bagpipes is limited to 9 notes and a limited range, most music is specifically written for the instrument. Tunes like Scotland the Brave and Amazing Grace are recognizable tunes played on the the bagpipes. Understand that some popular contemporary tunes are not suitable to be played on the pipes.

I've been piping for over 22 years and have experience playing for private functions, funerals, weddings, birthday celebrations and as military change of commands. I am an honorably retired Presbyterian Church in American (PCA) pastor having over 30 years of ministry experience.

The great highland bagpipes are loud. Playing outside is preferable, but the pipes can be played inside. Just understand the instrument does not have a volume control. Bagpipes can reach over 120 decibels, which is loud enough to cause immediate damage to the ears and hearing loss over time. A bagpiper can be heard from up to 10 miles away and reach over 111 decibels, which is louder than a lawn mower, a power saw and a blender!
