Jazz Vocalist with Brazilian, Latin and World Influences

About

Gabriele Tranchina is musically at home in many styles. With a strong background in jazz, she moves between Jazz, Latin and World Fusion, making her a perfect crossover artist.

Gabriele has her roots in Germany, where she was born, but her love for other cultures inspired her extended travels throughout Europe and Asia.

These experiences bring a unique sensibility to her work, matching her one-of-a-kind voice.

Settling in New York, Ms. Tranchina took advantage of its multi-cultural environment, giving her further inspiration for her work as an artist.

At the age 16, Gabriele was introduced to the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Chick Corea’s “Return to Forever” with singer Flora Purim, as well as Ella Fitzgerald.

As a performer, she still draws from those influences. In artists like Flora Purim, Ella Fitzgerald and Jobim, Gabriele found qualities that inhabit her very own: fearlessness, a connectedness to nature and beauty, joy, sophistication and exploration, backed by a solid technique.

She combines those many influences into her own brand of expression, expansively and freely, pouring her heart into each song, always with a clear point of view to communicate.

Gabriele’s ability to use rhythm, resting underneath her vocals, surges the music forward, keeping it alive in each moment. She is comfortable singing in German, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian, and English, so a strong international influence is never far away.

Her vocals, which have been called “impressive,” “technically perfect,” and “just breathtaking,” caused jazz legend, Mark Murphy, to say “Gabriele sings like a bird and swings and swings until the cows come home.”

In recent years Gabriele’s recordings have covered jazz standards, Brazilian, Latin and world music as well as compositions, mostly penned by her husband, Joe Vincent Tranchina. Her CD’s have been received with abundant praise and have further established her as a singer of the highest order. Her band members are musicians who are as much respected by their peers as they are celebrated by the public.

“Gabriele’s warm and inviting personality shines throughout Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in your Eyes (Rainchant Eclectic Records RER 1001, Oct 2017). One can sense her love of singing and of music, of life and of community, making the songs on this album truly special.”

The music of Of Sailing Ships and the Stars in your Eyes lets us discover a woman who is in full flower of her artistic gifts, in command of who she is as a singer, what she wants us to know about her music, and invites us to join her on a magical ride that will leave us changed in a very good way.

“ Tranchina can swing with the vivacity of Anita O’Day and echo the fragility of Astrud Gilberto on ballads, but there is nothing derivative in her kaleidoscopic flourishes, embracing chants, rap, spoken passages and vocalese.”
- Christopher Loudon, JazzTimes

“Tranchina’s lithe, clear; elegant singing evokes Sade, Flora Purim, Corinne Drewery (Swing Out Sister), and that “Girl from Ipanema,” Astrud Gilberto. ...—She uses her voice a bit like an instrument but never at the expense of the song. This set will fly you ‘round the world in a (happy) daze.” - Mark Keresman Icon Magazine

“…It is clear from Tranchina’s performance that she is a vocalist of the highest order. Her style is not conventional. ...When she interprets the narrative of a song and gets in to character, she has few peers. Anything new from her will be a welcome addition to the literature of vocal music.”
- Raul da Gama, (link hidden)

“Tranchina is a vocalist with a unique sound. There is the fragility of Stacey Kent and Astrud Gilberto but with the tonal quality of Nadia Basurto”
- Ian Lomax, Jazz Journal
