Straight Up ((link hidden)) plays an energetic mix of classic jazz, Latin, and jazz blues and has been featured at many of the Triangle’s premier jazz venues since 2010. Band members have diverse musical backgrounds that range from jazz, blues, and Latin, to folk, rock and reggae.
Straight Up features Taylor Savage, one of the hottest up and coming young tenor players in the Triangle. A Durham native, Taylor Savage received a Master’s of Music in Jazz Studies at Rutgers University studying under world-renowned saxophonist and educator Ralph Bowen. While at Rutgers, Taylor was privileged to perform with artists such as Paquito D’Rivera, Mike Smith, Chris Vadala, Mike Kocour, Jeff Helgesen, Marcus Roberts, Sean Jones, Tom “Bones” Malone, Byron Stripling, Terrell Stafford and Wynton Marsalis. While in the New York area, he also performed at Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space, the Blue Note Jazz Club (NY), as well as live on WBGO Jazz 88.3 Newark. Taylor is also an educator; He currently works as Assistant Jazz Instructor for the Panther Creek Jazz Band and Combo and was recently chosen to be the new director of the Durham Jazz Orchestra.
Taylor is backed up by Straight Up’s rhythm section which consists of drummer Larry Grovenstein, pianist Evan Mercer, bassist Ethan Basch and guitar/vocalist Bruce Taylor. These five musicians lend their musical talents to interpretations of jazz favorites as well as swinging bebop and goovin’ hard bop tunes.
