Beautiful Music For Your Special Event - Including Weddings.
City Lights Jazz is a trio of professional musicians consisting of a Vocalist, a Pianist, and a Double Bassist. We perform a wide variety of musical selections, especially featuring composers representing what is referred to as 'The Great American Songbook'.
Weddings: We have a Special Package for weddings. We can perform both Sacred and Secular Music for your Ceremony, your Rehearsal Dinner, or your Wedding Reception.
When an event or venue warrants it we are augmented with additional guest musicians including a Drummer, Saxophone and/or Trumpet, etc.
City Lights stepped in at the last minute to cover a church service for me. The reviews from the congregation were great and we look forward to booking them for future events.
Response from City Lights Jazz:
Thank you for your review, Sharon. Brian and Greg and I truly enjoyed playing the service at St. Mary's. It was a beautiful day and an uplifting experience in every way. Thank you!

What to Expect
City LIghts Jazz brings not only musical experience and sensitivity to every performance, but they also bring a sensitivity to the particular needs of your event and venue. We talk with you well ahead of the event to get the clearest possible picture of your musical needs and how we can meet those. Everything from repertoire selection to appropriate attire (not every client wants us in formal dress), and volume needs and limitations. Our goal is to make sure that your Special Event is Truly Special.

Jonathan Markow has been playing piano for over fifty years. Born in the Bronx, he formed his first jazz trio at a young age and has continued his dedication to jazz performance ever since. Jonathan has played with some of NYC’s finest club and studio musicians, including Eliot Zigmund, Iris Ornig, Gary Guzio, Ron McClure, Milt Hinton, Sean Smith, Brian Hurley, David Smith, and many others. Jonathan has arranged pieces for vocalists and composed scores for off-broadway plays while also working as a non-profit leader. Having moved to Durham in summer, 2015, he is delighted to be performing with the many deeply talented jazz artists in the Triangle area.
Rick Wolff, the Double Bassist, began City Lights Jazz several years ago. The group has played at a number of the finer establishments in the Raleigh area - such as the Irregardless Cafe, C Grace,
Watts and Ward, The Empress Room, Revival 1869, The Umstead Hotel and Spa as well as a number of private events at venues such as the Weymouth Center for the Arts in Southern Pines. Rick played professionally for years in Minneapolis/St. Paul, including ten years with Brazilian Jazz Pianist Manfredo Fest. He also accompanied the Mills Brothers at the Carlton Celebrity Room. He brings a lifetime love of music to his participation in City Lights Jazz.
Additional Booking Notes
The best thing for you (or your venue) to provide is a good Grand Piano which has just been tuned.
If a piano is not available we have the option of bringing a top-grade electric piano. However, our recordings are all done with a fine Grand Piano and our live performance can only be expected to rival that of our recordings if a good Grand Piano, just tuned, is provided.
Other than that we are self-contained in regard to PA amplification suitable for a small to medium room with perhaps up to 100 guests. In a larger venue with more guests, we would need to make use of a 'House System' on-site, preferably along with a trained sound-person who knows how to run it properly.

Influences & Inspiration
We play a wide variety of music, much of it from the Greatest American Composers such as Cole Porter, Rogers and Hart, George and Ira Gershwin, George Shearing, Hoagy Carmichael and many others from the 'Great American Songbook
We also perform a number of Bossa Nova tunes such as those by Antonio Carlos Jobim, and a selection of the finer contemporary writers and performers such as Norah Jones.
For a Top-Level performance we require a good quality Grand Piano that has just been tuned. We can bring an electronic piano but this would necessarily sound different (ie Not as good) as our recordings.
For larger rooms and more than perhaps 100 guests we would need a 'House PA'. This is something we would discuss with you well ahead of your planned event.
