About

I am Stella Hickey formally Walker but after marrying my amazing husband Kirt I changed my name. As a teenager I was teased about my last name. Was I walking there? Did my family invent the “walker”? It happened so much I told everyone when I grew up and got married, I was marrying a better last name then mine. I love God and his sense of humor. Cause I am now a Hickey. Teasing is still part of my life, but I appreciate my maiden name more now.
I am the second oldest and first daughter to my parents. With an older brother, younger sister, and younger brother. From my dad I learned to think outside the box and think on my feet. From my mother I gained a love of cooking and baking which I have passed on to my four daughters. Yes, my poor husband is the only man in our house if you don’t count our dog. We say he is just a ladies’ man.
Currently live in Hermiston, Oregon, USA. I divided my available time between school, teaching beginning acrylic painting classes, directing a community children’s choir, and my church responsibilities, one of which I happily sit on the development committee for our church recreational camp.
If you had not guessed yet I like being busy but the above our just a few of the things I like to do. I also enjoy coaching youth sports (Soccer, Basketball, Softball, and Volleyball), singing in a local choir, working for a local Parks & Recreation organization developing activities, events, and classes to improve the community and going camping. I am most happy in the forest in any season.
After 8 years I am venturing back into public speaking which I love doing. I took a short break to raise my four beautiful daughters and to battle Leukemia. I started out my public speaking relationship in High school when I attended a Sciences and Humanity Symposium for High School students where I presented on stage in front of 2000 peers. I went on to compete in Extemporaneous public speaking in FFA (Future Farmer of American) where I won first place at both districts and regional competitions. After high school I found myself teaching and speaking on a national stage with the National Volunteer Firefighter Council (NVFC). I created and presented classes on collaboration, leadership, program assessment and volunteer burnout just to name a few. Now I am looking forward to helping to motivate and inspire people to achieve their greatest potential.
Thomas Edison once stated that "most people miss opportunities because they are dressed in overalls and looks like work." I believe many miss opportunities because they have placed themselves in a box and have limited their potential.
I have experienced many trials in my life from blowing my knee out in high school leaving my dream of catching for the UW softball team unfulfilled to a severe back injury at 22 years of age which ended my dream of becoming a Firefighter/Paramedic to being diagnosed with Minere's Disease to battling cancer. Eight months after my first daughter was born my husband was hospitalized for 16 days which he lost his job and left us without an income along with $72,000,00 of medical expenses. Our third daughter at age six was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and our oldest during her freshman year sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury. Through all this I have gained certifications in First Aid/CPR, Driver's Education Instructor, Incident and command training, advanced my coaching training to Junior High school level, became a basic soccer referee and I ran a business for 20 years which thrived. I have helped my oldest establish her business that is in its second year of operation. I have a positive outlook on life that has seen me through tough times which I believe steams from good parents who taught me to overcome hard things, sports that taught me endurance and resilience, great mentors that saw great potential in me and encourage me to pursue my dreams and a strong faith that guided me through the darkest times.

Influences and inspiration

I have been influenced by many different individuals and groups they helped to shape who I am. Mr. Chuck Miller my FFA advisor encouraged me to compete in Public Speaking, showed me what integrity and leadership should look like. Tiger Smittendorf a fellow speaker in the Fire Service showed me that no one should be confined to a stereotypical box, and everyone has something to offered. John Bytheway and Hank Smith inspiration speakers are examples of the kind of speaker I want to be, they touch thousands of lives. My 2014 traveling soccer team inspired me with their ability to lose a game but still find the positives and never give up. Their positive attitude made them an exceptional team to coach.

Thomas Edison's quote "Opportunity is often missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work" has influenced how I look at difficulties as opportunities to grow. This has opened the door for me to do extraordinary things.

Elder Jeffery R. Holland is quoted as saying "help him or her escape our culture's obsession with comparing, competing, and never being enough." spoke to me on how we view competition and how many of us compare ourselves to other only to find fault where there is none. It brings to mind NBA player Muggsy Bogues who was only 5'3" tall but didn't let the fact he was not as tall as the average 6'3" NBA player stop him from pursuing his passion for basketball. Olivia Moultrie was not deterred by the fact that no one was as young (16 yrs. old) as she was playing on the Portland Thorns Soccer team as she was. We are only limited by our comparison and our attitude towards our own potential.
