Why book Rick Holland Productions?

Welcome to Rick Holland Productions! Rick’s bands have been creating exciting musical entertainment for special events for the last 25 years!

From Rick’s spectacular Uptown Society Orchestra’s to his tasteful quartets and trios, Rick will bring the sounds of the American Songbook to life at your next Event or function.

The broad repertoire his groups encompass and the care with which he deals with musical details are a welcome exception in this age of super specialization and an obsession with quick results at the expense of real quality.

Burnin' Band!

I had the distinct pleasure of hearing this band live last night at the "Tala Vera" in Rochester, NY. It is unquestionably one of the best bands I have heard in the upstate area. The leader Rick is as fluent a player as one could ever hope to hear with a wonderful flow if imaginative ideas. Between him and the hard swinging tenorist, Andy Weinzler, who also blew me away with his unending flow of ideas. All of this is possible when the rhythm section is as solid as this one is! The ensemble playing was clean and the sound was homogenous. As if this were not enough, Lindsey Holland, vocalist, topped it off with her wonderful voice and first rate phrasing. Great arrangements and great playing! Catch them next month!

Outstanding wedding reception with an outstanding band!

We had the pleasure of having the Little Big Band play at our wedding in May 2012. What a fun night we had with their incredible vocalist Lindsay and amazingly talented band members. From the minute we met Rick Holland and heard the band play we knew they were the band for us. It was a pleasure to work with Rick, who was so professional and helpful in many ways especially song choices from everything to cocktail music, our entrance song, first dance, parent dances to our exit song. Our friends and family are still raving about the music and will seek out the Little Big Band for future musical entertainment. The dance floor was never empty and satisfied our guests ages 3 to 73!! We are thrilled with the Little Big Band and look forward to hearing them again in the near future!! Thank you for making our wedding so special! Maureen and Mark Deckman

Rick Holland's Little Big Band swings and rocks!

The "Little Big Band" had a fantastic "big" sound in the B.O.B. concert in Grand Rapids, MI. Rick and his duo trumpeter were awesome. Rick's flugelhorn tunes were beautiful, and Lindsey's vocals lit up the room. She has a beautiful swinging style and good chops at improvisation. The sax section was smooth and shiny. Piano added flair to the arrangements. We had a great night of jazz from 6-9 pm. Go and hear this band if you can!

Pleasantly surprised

This was my first wedding that had an orchestra, the band was excellent. They played just loud enough to be heard, but low enough where we could still talk amongst ourselves. The young lady who sang had a great voice and the band was very talented. I wish they sold a CD of the music, which was played that night. We had a great time.

The Rick Holland Little Big Band plays great jazz!

I make it a point to hear the Rick Holland-Evan Dobbins Little Big Band whenever I can. They stand out as a top-notch jazz band even in the musically-endowed environment of Rochester NY. The Little Big Band plays great arrangements with great professionalism. If you haven’t yet had a chance to see them live, treat yourself to their ‘Trilby’ CD; it’s become one of my favorites in my jazz collection.
And you have to hear the Rick Holland Quartet with Lindsey Holland on vocals; a smaller but no less talented combo playing a collection of vocal arrangements featuring the talented Lindsey Holland.

A very mighty Little Big Band

Rick's band moves effortlessly from lush melodic modal motifs to cool full raging big band swing all with masterfully constructed solo work that had me on the edge of my seat the entire performance. It was a real treat for me to hear a band of virtuosos putting it down and burnin' it up.

Terrific musicians, first rate performance

I have had the pleasure to do some arranging and writing for Rick's groups and I have to say that his groups are always chocked full of the best musicians around. It's a pleasure to have music played with precision and integrity - no matter what the style or genre. I would highly recommend any or Rick's groups for a jazz or commercial setting.

Great Band!

In my capacity as a photographer I have experienced Rick's Little Big Band in both club and studio environments. They are wonderful to hear! Even though I have never been a big fan or follower of big band music, after hearing it live, I can understand the draw! And put Lindsey out front singing and they are a great thing to hear!

Rick Holland Bands Rocks!

Dr. Rick continues to deliver perpetual musical gratification on his recordings, as well as live performances. I have seen his bands several times over the years, and each time thrilled and fulfilled my musical jones. It's real jazz, and real be-bop, as inspiring as the jazz music my Dad played growing up in the late sixties and early seventies. Dr. Rick continues to epitomize a virtuoso that transcends time, talent, and passion. I highly recommended his band for any of the listed musical offerings on this web page. Book this band, NOW!!

Rick Holland’s flugelhorn improvisations flow with a seasoned musician’s imagination and a hard working trumpeter’s ability to play whatever comes to mind. His piquant touches to the top of the staff (or above) from wherever he happens to be in the improvised melodic line are a great example of where daily practice can take you. His sound is attractive, in fact the sonority he gets from the flugelhorn is an essential component of the group’s impact, and his love of Chet Baker’s melodic invention is completely internalized. Holland’s ability to improvise melodically from his imagination, as opposed to fitting memorized patterns of notes into the chord, is worth careful listening. That’s the way it’s done, folksLazaro Vega Radio Host Blue Lake Public Radio

Amazing! Rick Holland Productions worked seamlessly with our wedding, where we had three separate "performances" that were adapted to by Ricks use of different members of the Little Big Band. We had a cocktail reception where a trio played, then a brass quartet accompanied our Wedding ceremony. After our guests were transported by horse-drawn carriage to a lake side reception site, the Little Little Big Band got things started and the full Little Big Band played the night away to the extreme pleasure of our entire party. They even let Joe Robinson jam with them in the chill of the autumn, fire-lit eveing! Thank You so much Rick! Sincerely, Matthew Cooper, Branford, Pa. 10/13/10

Rick Holland and his band played our wedding on August 28, 2010. Rick could not have been more accommodating to my husband and my wants and needs for music at the wedding. We communicated through email, over the phone, and met with each other once to go over the details. Rick was very thorough and always set our minds at ease.
During our ceremony, his quartet played us up the aisle with a romantic song and down the aisle with Fireworks which set the mood for the festive evening to begin. The cocktail hour began immediately following the ceremony and Ricks band did not miss a beat....the little big band entertained guests while they mingled and got a bite to eat. When the wedding party was ready to be announced, Rick took the microphone as we were all introduced. After the speeches were out of the way, Rick and the band let loose! With a full band and two singers, a male and a female, we partied for the next four hours! The guests were dancing, singing, and truly having a great time as did we! The band definitely made the night!
The songs were exactly what we requested and the sound quality was superb. I would gladly book Rick and his band for another occasion as well as recommend them. Thanks again Rick! Erin and Mike, Victor, NY

"Just a short note to thank you ever so much for the great show and dance for us here at the HAG. I have waited until today to write this as we had a meeting on Wednesday and it confirmed everything that I told everyone about the upcoming show and dance. As you and the band said this was the first time you have played in a hanger and I must say, the acoustics were awesome and the sounds were great even where I was sitting. Midway through the dance you asked me for a favorite number. At the time I thought you had more than enough on your plate but how in hell did you save the song "At Last" for the very last number. It was the very song I would have requested and it took me back to my Junior and Senior days in high school. Nuf said about that. Yup, I might have had a small tear in my eye, hearing the music, you absolutely took over the song and I thank you so much for it. It made an old Marine so very happy. I look forward to working with you again. THX Rick!---Joe Pompilli, Band Director, Kendall HS

Trumpeter Rick Holland boasts a confident style, with a gentle tone reminiscent of Chet Baker, and Holland is equally adept on flgelhorn. On flugelhorn, he boasts a rich, full tone that purrs with warmth. On the faster tunes, he steams. Holland is particularly impressive when simply singing a melody through his horn: on "Come Rain or Come Shine," for example, he bends the core of the song just enough to let you know he is doing it purposefully. His tone might remind some of Chet Baker, who is clearly an influence, although Baker achieved a similarly light and mellow sound on trumpet. Steve Loewy--All Music Guide

Rick Holland has a true sense for beauty in his playing. He is a master of the jazz language and has a unique lyrical talent that sets his trumpet and flugelhorn playing apart from most other players. I find it very important in today's jazz environment that a player of Rick Holland's talent gets heard and recognized because he carries on a tradition of swing and melodic playing that I consider most important in jazz.

IN TIME’S SHADOW

The Rick Holland /Evan Dobbins Little Big Band

This recording features the sounds of timeless jazz and new music written for a little big band. A little big band is usually a band composed of less than 20 pieces and more than a tentet (10-piece band). Here, a tenet, listeners will delight in the sounds of updated Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, and Gerry Mulligan treasures as well as songs composed and arranged by Jim Martin, Bill Dobbins, Kerry Strayer and Brent Wallarab among others. The record opens with “SUNY-Triangle” a driving samba written over Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Triste.” It features some excellent soloing by tenor saxophonist John Viavattine and pianist John Nyrges. “Black and Tan Fantasy,” is played in a 12/8 Afro-Cuban feel with involved soloing from soprano saxophone player Matt Pivec and trumpeter Brian Shaw. Their extended improvisations make this song one of the best on the CD. Earl Hines’ standard “Rosetta” is bright and punchy and features some catchy call and response in the horn sections while Gerry Mulligan’s “Night Lights,” has a moody West Coast cool vibe with its 40s film noir sound and expansive polyphonic se

They've performed together over the years. As jazz harmonica ace Hendrik Meurkens joins educator/flugelhornist Rick Holland and his quartet, for a cool, jazzy brew consisting of standards and originals. Melody is the key ingredient throughout, as the lead soloists complement each other via alternating statements and gleeful unison choruses. Meurkens' illuminating work on "Someday My Prince Will Come" might beckon you to head for a sandy beach on a warm summer's day. Meanwhile, Holland melds warm lines with a reflective demeanor to coincide with the rhythm section's relaxed, yet forceful sense of swing. There are quite a few jubilantly performed trinkets here, as the band projects a streamlined approach via a no frills style of play. In addition, Meurkens performs on vibes during the final piece, "Slidin."

The musicians' unflappable composure translates into an overriding sense of sophistication and tenderness. Hence, the music prompts you to dispel the common drudgeries of life. Now that alone, speaks volumes! Recommended.

In Time’s Shadow
BlueJazz
by Ollie Bivins

Rick Holland (Trumpet) and Evan Dobbins (Trombone) lead a group of New York area musicians who could give the more well-known big bands in New York and Los Angeles a run for their money.

Consisting of original compositions by band members and several from unheralded composer and former Jazz Specialist for the Smithsonian Institute: Brent Wallarab, In Time’s Shadow breathes new life into a jazz genre that some say has been in need of a transfusion for a long time.

Although the 10 member band big band also covers material by Duke Ellington (“Black and Tan Fantasy”), Earl “Fatha” Hines (“Rosetta”), Alec Wilder (“While We’reYoung”), and Gerry Mulligan (“Night Lights”), it is on the well crafted originals of Jim Martin that the band really shines. From the hard driving samba of “SUNY-Triangle”, to the film noir-like tilte track, the 10 piece aggregation’s playing is marked by strong, self confident soloing throughout.

And it is this individual musicianship, particularly with trumpeter Holland, along with the quality of the original compositions that makes In Tim’es Shadow a treat. I would
