If you seek an accomplished piper in South Carolina with great attention to detail, look no further. I've been playing bagpipes since 2002 and am rated by the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association as a Grade II player. I have performed for every type of event from ocean-side funerals to festivals attended by British royalty.
I tailor my uniform and musical selection to ensure a performance that adds to your event.
I am also available for lessons on the bagpipes; services as bugle player; and educational/speaking engagements about Scotland, bagpipes, and Scotch Whisky.
JD was a huge hit with my guests and made my retirement ceremony a very special event. Excellent musician and very professional. I am so glad I hired him!
JD arrived at the Church early to warm up and he did a phenomenal job. I did not have specific songs for him to play and asked him to select the songs and he did a wonderful job!
Response from Quality Piping with JD Ingraham:
It was a lovely ceremony, thanks for having me!
Everything was great!
JD played for my moms interment. He was amazing! He played the hymns we chose & the final one was Amazing Grace-he started it and while playing he slowly turned & walked slowly away while playing. It was so beautiful-it mirrored our slow, sweet farewell to Mom.
He came to us in Savannah where we have a healthy contingent of bagpipers, however we needed one on the weekend beforbour local Scottish Rite Festival so ALL of them were unavoidable due to practice.
I’m so glad we found JD Ingraham on GIGSALAD-he was perfect!
JD absolutely blew me away. He played at my wedding just before I walked down the aisle. The sound of bagpipes throughout the church took my breathe away (and even made my groom tear up!). He was an absolute pleasure to work with - he answered every email in a timely fashion and helped with my song selections. A bride's dream, really! Five stars, highly recommend!
Response from Quality Piping with JD Ingraham:
I'm so happy to have been a part of your special day! Thank you for the delightful review :)
JD was awesome! He arrived early and was ready to play at the agreed upon time. He played all of the songs I requested as well as a wonderful selection of other Celtic songs. He gave a description and brief history of the songs. He mingled with the guests and happily answered any questions. He is a very talented musician.
Response from Quality Piping with JD Ingraham:
Thanks for having me! It was a wonderful party :)
We could not have been more pleased with JD. He was prompt, professional, prepared and very talented. Highly recommend him!
My father was so honored by James' reverence and professionalism. Not to mention his beautiful music. My father requested babpipes in his last wishes and James delivered!!
We hired Quality Bagpipes to play at my mother's graveside service in Savannah back in November and so very glad we did. JD was so easy to work with on song selection and arrangements. He played at the perfect distance and volume and every song was special and poignant. While I hope we don't have to have another service anytime soon, I know who to call if we do. He made it so very special for us.
JD's performance for the students at my school was a totally new and exciting experience for them, which he was completely prepared for and did a comprehensive overview to help build their background knowledge. He did a wonderful job interacting with the young audience, explaining how the instrument worked, the traditional dress, and demonstrating all of the kinds of music that he could play using his bagpipes. The kids were completely engaged and had a great time listening to this new-to-them music. JD was very professional in his presentation and throughout his visit, and was also very flexible with the event format and venue when bad weather forced our group inside.

What to Expect
I own three kilts and multiple uniforms, allowing me to customize my dress to match the event I'm playing for - everything from a barefoot barn fests to black tie ceremonies with VIPs.
I play traditional Celtic music to suit any mood, and am happy to to work with you to provide the best possible set list of tunes for your event. For smaller indoor events I can switch the great highland bagpipe out for lowland small pipes that are quieter.
If desired, I am comfortable discussing bagpipes, Celtic music, and related traditions in front of a large audience for educational and cultural events.
Note that bagpipes are notoriously finicky in variable weather, and in the case of inclement weather, I request extra accommodation.
If you request a bugle performance, I can play several basic hymns and popular patriotic tunes.
If you're not sure what you'd like to hear, but you know you're interested in me at your event, I would suggest one of the following:
*Before events - Bagpipes are great for gathering folks around to signal the beginning of an event.
*Processionals and recessionals - Especially at weddings, bagpipes are useful to lead people into or out of an event.
*Special Music - If your event calls for moving music such as "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes, "Taps" on a bugle, or similar traditional melodies.
*Special Presentation - If your group would like to learn about the bagpipes, kilts, Celtic tradition, or whisky (or just have a traditional toast).
*Background Music - Bagpipes are loud, but in a sufficiently large space (such as a field or golf course) they can be delightful additions to the atmosphere. Music comes in sets of 20-30 minutes, or on and off for an hour.
*Afterwards - I often play pipes as I walk off into the distance for a nice effect.
A benefit of booking me is that I lead the Charleston Pipe Band, and as such can guarantee a backup bagpiper in the case of unforeseen circumstances. I have a network of roughly 30 fellow players and students in the greater Charleston region that can be called upon to stand in for me in case of emergency.
Booking rates depend on several factors, including travel time, wait time, and playing time, so please include the location, duration, and music expectations for your event.
I began piping in the wake of 9/11 after having seen many pipers performing on TV. At the time I also played trumpet, and I continued playing both instruments in the Knoxville, TN area for 5 years. I had opportunities to play both instruments with university music ensembles while in college. Over the course of my piping career I've become a very successful competitive player and I now serve as Pipe Major for the Charleston Pipe Band. I offer bugle services (taps, service hymns, etc) as a secondary addition to piping performances. I have also begun offering Scotch whisky education, tastings, and toasts, if you would like a special addition to your celebration.
Specific training on the bagpipes includes lessons with Pipe Major Sandy Jones (who played at JFK's funeral), Pipe Major ED Neigh (one of the first non-Scots to make a serious name for himself on the Scottish competition circuit), Pipe Major Jim Dillahey (director of piping at The Citadel), and many other accomplished musicians.
Additional Booking Notes
Bagpipes are extremely loud. I will probably not need a microphone, and you will want a room large enough that the sound level will not cause discomfort to the audience. The small pipes will need a microphone for any venue larger than your average sized bedroom.
In preparation of a performance I may request room to warm up that is out of ear-shot of the audience - either several hundred yards away or in a moderately sound proof room, or both.
If you would like a traditional toast or tasting of whisky as part of your event, inquire for requirements.

Influences & Inspiration
I play traditional Irish and Scottish music, as well as a small selection of hymns. I will not play most patriotic tunes or modern music on the bagpipes. The majority of Pop, Rock, and Country music is impossible to play, due to scale and dynamic limitations of the Great Highland Bagpipes.
On bugle, I stick to the traditional stuff - hymns, bugle calls, and patriotic tunes.
My whisky tasting and toasting is heavily influenced by The Scotch Whisky Man of Fife, Scotland.
Microphone or amplification is recommended if I am playing lowland small pipes.
