Family Reunion: The Gang’s All Here!

A family reunion is something you can opt to do or not to do with your family. Some families choose to hold a reunion every year, while others only do it every 5 years or not at all. How extravagant the event is up to you! Here are some tips from GigSalad for hosting a family reunion.

It Will Give Us So Much Extra Space to do Activities!

First, you must decide where and when to hold your reunion. Since this is a large gathering, you will need a large venue, and you will need to notify everyone well in advance so they can get it in their calendar and make plans to attend. If you are holding the reunion in the summer, consider renting out a park or other outdoor area. This gives you room for activities and for everyone to mingle with one another. Another option would be to hold it at a banquet hall or other large indoor venue. For an outdoor event, you will want to rent some tents, tables, and chairs if there isn’t enough already at the park.

With all these people you’re going to have to plan some group games and activities for everyone to participate in. If you’re holding the reunion at a park or other outdoor space, check to see if they have a baseball diamond, basketball court, sand volleyball court, etc. that you can use. These are activities that a large number of people can participate in that are a lot of fun. You could also hire an act to stroll around and perform various acts such as a juggler or strolling magician.

Survey Says...

In addition to having an assortment of activities for everyone to participate in, also provide some entertainment for your family. If there are a lot of younger children in your family, you may want a balloon twister or face painter there to keep them entertained. If the event is being held outside, another solid entertainment option for the kids would be some inflatable bounce houses and rides. There are also a lot of good options for more interactive entertainment. Hire a game show company to host a Family Feud game! What is more perfect for a family reunion than that. You could also go for a murder mystery event. This can get the whole family involved as well and keep you entertained throughout the evening.

As far as entertainment goes, you could also book musicians to keep everyone entertained. Any type of event DJ can keep your party hoppin; however, if you want to mix it up a bit, hire a karaoke DJ. Get your family members up on the stage and have them be the entertainment. Another fun form of entertainment is dueling pianos. These piano players take requests and get the crowd singing along with favorites like Sweet Caroline, Don’t Stop Believing, Bennie and the Jets, and more. Any of these other bands will also be an excellent selection for your family reunion: cover band; jazz band; party band; and tribute band. If your family is from a certain culture, hire appropriate world music. If you’re Irish, hire Celtic musicians; if you’re from Mexico, book a Mariachi band, etc.

Fire Up the Grill

Next up is food. Depending on the size of your family, you may want to go with a caterer. For an outdoor event, you could choose to BBQ. Have each family member bring something to grill up, such as, brats, burgers, chicken, veggies, etc. Assign certain people to be in charge of the grill at certain times throughout the day. You could also do a meal potluck style. Have everyone bring a particular item; assign people to entrees, side dishes, desserts, etc. For some families, you may need a drink to get through the day. Hire a bartender to keep drinks flowing for those family members of age.

Don’t forget to capture the day. If you want to make sure you get enough pictures of the reunion, hire a photographer to stroll the event to capture everything. Another option would be to have a videographer. This option would work best if you have an actual activity to record, such as a baseball game or family feud game.

A family reunion is a great bonding event for your family, especially if you all live far apart. This does require a lot of coordination and the ability to get everyone to participate and attend. Best of luck and have a great reunion!
