Overview

A Mumbai Taxi trip is an entirely unique journey with a soundtrack that draws from West Africa, Jamaica, Brazil, Cuba, Trinidad, South Africa and India, fused into a complex, hypnotizing psychedelic tapestry. Woven into the cloth are a wide array of both entirely new, original songs in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, even Sanskrit, with entirely new interpretations of Cuban Son, Guajira and Mambo, Brazilian Tropicalia, West African Bukutsi and Soukous, Jamaican Reggae and Ska, and South African Soweto Beat music. Driving rhythms, soaring solos, trippy vocals and provocative lyrics combine for an experience like no other.

What to expect

Whether it's a high intensity interpretation of Cuban legend, Arsenio Rodriquez, or a radical reinvention of Caetano Veloso or Bob Marley, or one of the dozens of original World Fusion experiments composed by internationally recognized poet/songwriter, Phillip Henry Christopher (Philadelphia Phil), Mumbai Taxi, led by two of the country's most versatile and innovative artists, is sure to surprise, delight and thrill any audience, from intimate settings to festival stages.

About

Mumbai Taxi is the result of the most auspicious coming together of musicians from the most diverse talents imaginable. Founded by poet/songwriter/singer and guitarist, Phillip Henry Christopher (Philadelphia Phil) as a way to express his decades of experience writing, recording and performing with a broad range of bands, from early Reggae experiments, Agni, Rhygin, Quasar and Groove Yard, to his years as leader of the Cuban-style Mambo orchestra, Urbanos, to decades of solo and acoustic Americana, Blues, Western and Swing music.

Phil writes and sings in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese, and has even been known to toss a Sanskrit or Greek lyric into a song, and composes and arranges in a variety of folkloric forms from Cuban Son and Guajira, to Calypso, Soukous, Bukutsi, Jit and Ska, all very often fused with Reggae and Psychedelia. In 2007 he reunited with Quasar bandmate Larry Griffin-Sledge to form the new Psychedelic World band, bringing Larry's legendary organ and synthesizer genius to the sound. Larry's performing life began touring with The Temptations, followed by a long list of superstar groups, from gigs with Buckwheat Zydeco and Montreal, Manchild (Baby Face) and soul icon, Lonnie Lester.

Since that time, Phil and Larry's Mumbai Taxi has recorded and performed live with virtuoso artists from India, Nigeria, Cuba, Trinidad, Jamaica and Greece, as well as many outstanding American World musicians. Whether it's a high intensity interpretation of Cuban legend, Arsenio Rodriquez, or a radical reinvention of Caetano Veloso or Bob Marley, or one of the dozens of their original World Fusion experiments, Mumbai Taxi, led by two of the country's most versatile and innovative artists, is sure to surprise, delight and thrill any audience, with soaring sets for grand festival stages and soulful sets for more intimate settings.

Phil and Larry are accepting a limited number of bookings for 2021. After the year we've all just had, we need a little high life, and MT can bring the groove!
