Born in the small town of Sumter, South Carolina then relocating to Henderson, Tennessee at the age of 4; Mathis discovered his passion for movement at an early age. Although he didn't have exposure to learning dance as a child, perseverance to find the source became stronger. However, the rural demographic for his upbringing introduced new ideas of inspiration that could not be witnessed in a facility. Fascinated by the intention and coexistence of the forest, he began studying the behaviors of the life inhabiting them and incorporating their movements into his practice. This early interest laid the foundation for what would become a lifelong dedication to exploring the intersection of human and animal forms through artistic expression.

Mathis pursued formal training at Austin Peay State University from (phone number hidden)1, where he honed his skills in ballet, contemporary African, pole, color guard, and acrobatics. His bachelor of arts in psychological science and dance provides him with a strong technical foundation, while his natural curiosity and creativity pushes him to explore unconventional forms of movement. This research has became the cornerstone of his artistic vision. Throughout his career, Mathis has developed a distinctive style that is dynamic and deeply evocative in both the teaching and performance space.
