About

The word prodigy is a term used too often in the musical world but in the case of Marie Ginocchio it is a title that does not truly explain how phenomenally talented a pianist she actually is. Still in her late teens, Marie only came to the piano 5 years ago, but in that short space of time she went from becoming a self-taught student struggling through a tsunami of YouTube content to a performer that is admired by musicians around the world.

Initially forging a path in film scores and classical music, she quickly fell in love with Jazz pioneers like Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Vince Guaraldi, and the late Chick Corea. Chick especially has had a major influence on her musical education as she participated in his course before his untimely passing. Her work includes the subtle textures that Chick learnt alongside legendary artists such as Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo, Blue Mitchell, Herbie Mann, and Stan Getz and also includes her own personal love of musicians Makato Ozone and Hiromi Uehara.

That constant relationship with Chick Corea’s back catalogue bore fruit in 2021 with a piece of work inspired by his 1978 album called Mad Hatter, which was in turn a jazz homage to Lewis Carol’s Alice in Wonderland. A set of nine through-composed solo piano pieces, Marie glides across the keys in just under an hour of extraordinary Jazz inflections.

Titled Wonderland and featuring shifting time signatures and tempos along with dissonant harmonies, the album is a leap through the looking glass into a world of unimagined pleasure. Each song includes a wealth of original ideas, sounds and rhythms which give audiences a brand-new slant on the everlasting musical form.

With so many skills in her arsenal, it is no surprise that Marie wants to venture further afield to include playing in groups and moving into the word of electronic instruments. As 2022 takes hold and Wonderland begins to touch the hearts of many, the work of Marie Ginocchio will begin to resonate with Jazz aficionados everywhere and that is when her star will truly take its place among the greats in the business.
