About

Shacara A. Johnson is a powerhouse in the world of leadership, personal transformation, and women’s empowerment. With over two decades of military service, Shacara has trained and mentored more than 10,000 soldiers and emerging leaders. Her work reflects a deep belief in purposeful service, resilience, and truth-telling leadership. Now, as she transitions into civilian life, her mission has only deepened: to amplify the voices of women and youth, unlock untapped potential, and challenge broken systems through empowered, values-driven leadership.

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Shacara grew up in a community that demanded grit, vision, and self-determination. Her upbringing instilled in her a strong sense of justice, a relentless work ethic, and a deep empathy for those navigating systemic barriers. Influenced by the resilience of her mother, aunt, and early mentors, she found her calling to lead, teach, and advocate.

Shacara enlisted in the U.S. Army and rose through the ranks to become an Operations Sergeant. This role required strategic thinking, crisis leadership, and the ability to influence across all levels. She became known as a direct yet compassionate leader who held high standards and inspired others to do the same. Her military career is marked by numerous commendations, including recognition for her extensive volunteer work with youth in both Michigan and Pennsylvania.

While serving in the military, Shacara pursued her education with the same intensity and focus. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Sociology and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership. She is currently completing a Doctorate in Public Administration at Walden University. Her doctoral capstone centers on educational equity for minority students, blending policy expertise with her personal experience to advocate for sustainable, just outcomes in underserved communities.

As the founder and CEO of EmpowHER Consulting LLC, Shacara provides coaching, curriculum development, motivational speaking, and workforce readiness programs. Her signature leadership model, the T.R.U.T.H. Framework—Tell the Truth, Reclaim Your Voice, Unlearn the Lies, Tend to Your Energy, and Honor Your Becoming—has impacted students, educators, nonprofit leaders, and professional women nationwide. Whether leading a corporate training, hosting a youth summit, or delivering a keynote at a leadership retreat, Shacara speaks with authenticity, depth, and conviction.

In 2025, Shacara released her debut memoir, Against All Odds: Finding Purpose and Love Without My Father. The book explores themes of fatherlessness, forgiveness, and faith and has received widespread praise for its transparency and healing message. She is currently writing her second book, Sovereign: Shining Bright in a World of Darkness, along with an accompanying workbook, journal, and a theatrical one-woman show titled Sovereign: Detroit. These projects examine trauma, self-leadership, and the courage to rise in spaces that try to dim your light.

Shacara’s story is not just about overcoming—it’s about transformation, truth, and intentionality. She has spoken at conferences, retreats, and sorority conventions across the country. Her signature keynotes and trainings include:
• Leading Yourself When Others Fail You
• The Power of Promise and Personal Accountability
• Women in Leadership: Reclaiming Power in Spaces That Diminish You
• From Surface Pressure to Sovereign Power: Redefining Success as a Woman
• T.R.U.T.H. in Action: A Youth Leadership Experience
• Cultivating Inclusive Leadership in Public Policy and Education
• Adoption, Motherhood, and the Journey to Belonging

As a passionate advocate for women veterans, Shacara also curates training and community events focused on the post-military experience.

Shacara is a devoted wife to Donnie (RayShaun) and a proud mother of five. Her youngest son, Eli, was adopted and is the inspiration behind her children’s book series, beginning with Ali’s Big Welcome: A Story of Adoption and Love. She is also an active member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., having served as the Northeastern Region Military Initiatives Affairs Committee Chair.

Whether she is advocating for justice, inspiring the next generation, or guiding women through transformation, Shacara A. Johnson lives by a single guiding principle: You don’t have to wait for the world to crown you. You can lead, heal, and rise on your own terms.

Influences and inspiration

My work is shaped by a diverse blend of personal mentors, powerful women leaders, and cultural voices who taught me how to lead with truth, resilience, and purpose.

Personally, I’m most influenced by the women in my family—my mother, Auntie Linda, sister Dalethia, and best friends Tiffany, Ronnika, and Shynikka—who modeled strength, sacrifice, and loyalty in a world that often overlooks Black women. Their love, leadership, and faith continue to ground and guide me.

Professionally, I’ve drawn from the legacy of women like Michelle Obama, Dr. Maya Angelou, and Brené Brown, who each in their own way taught me how to hold space, speak truth to power, and turn personal pain into public purpose. In the world of leadership and education, I’m influenced by transformational and servant leaders who value justice, inclusion, and integrity—like Dr. Angela Davis, Stacey Abrams, and Colin Powell.

Creatively, I find inspiration in storytelling—whether through books, music, or stage. The bold honesty of Viola Davis, the introspective beauty of (link hidden)ie, and the layered brilliance of films like The Color Purple and Encanto (especially “Surface Pressure”) all inform how I speak, write, and lead.

Ultimately, I’m influenced by anyone who chooses purpose over popularity, wholeness over hustle, and healing over hiding. These are the people—and principles—that shape my voice, my brand, and my missio
