Overview
I am a piper with 17+ years experience. I am available for weddings, funerals, graduations, retirements, birthday and other celebrations, commemorations, and festivities.
I play numerous Scottish, sacred, secular, funerary, and festive tunes and would be glad to invite your input or assist you in selecting the tunes you would like to have me perform.
I am a performer and entertainer and add a bit of history and background of each tune as well as a bit of clean and non-political Scottish and/or Irish humor to my presentation.

Piper J.R. Arthur was wonderful. His music was lovely, and his personality sparkled -- he made the wedding so much more special! He was wonderful in guiding the bride through musical selections and keeping in close touch with the planners. Couldn't have asked for a better wedding music collaborator!

We had J.R. Arthur play for our father's memorial service. J.R.'s piping is fabulous and he has a warm and engaging presence. He was very thorough about making sure he would play according to our wishes and was so enjoyable to work with. I highly recommend J.R. Arthur for any event at which you would like to have a piper!

All was fine but did not feel the challenge coin story fit with the service at Arlington National Cemetery.
It would have been fine at a wake but I wasn't pleased with that part. JR and I didn't talk about him doing that part.
Think I asked JR to play Anchors Away and did not hear it but perhaps I will on the video I had commissioned to be made will hear it.
Bagpiper
Response from J.R. Arthur:
Mary Lynn,
My deepest apologies for presenting you with my challenge coin.
I did not play "Anchors Aweigh," since everyone was remaining long after the service and it was beyond the time I was allowed to play by the time you and your family were departing. However, you will note that I remained until all of your party departed. The cemetery reps tell me I am the only piper to remain. All families having funerals with a piper, with the exception of those for which I play depart an empty field. I remain to let you know that your loved one is not alone.
I sincerely regret that I disappointed you. I truly do try to go the extra mile by working with your cemetery representative to insure I am able to play more than the two tunes they normally allow. Now, I'm sure you remember that I did ask if you thought it might be allowable to include a bit of humor and you agreed. If I had known you felt differently, I would not have presented my coin as thanks for the honor you provided me in paying.
May God be with you and your family,
Your Piper,
J.R. Arthur, LCdr, USN, Retired
JR made my father's memorial service so very special and uniquely memorable to my family. From the first moment we spoke he helped guide and advise me through the military ceremony. His attention to detail, professionalism, and caring nature made this event extraordinary. His kindness to all and his skill as a piper will always be remembered as the perfect compliment in honoring my father's memory.
We were thrilled to have JR at our commencement ceremony. It added such a nice touch to the event and we look forward to having him next year!

JR made our celebration of life extraordinarily special! My husband had Irish/Scottish ancestry and truly loved being in Scotland. JR sang his favorite hymn, spoke eloquently and played beautifully. Many thanks for lifetime memories, JR. May you live a long life yourself!

Mr. Arthur did an absolutely beautiful job performing for my family. He made the performance personal and brought tears to everyone's eyes. Despite the cold morning and snow, he kept playing. He made this day truly memorable and my mom said it was one of the best days of her life.

From start to finish J.R. was a true professional. He has an excellent repertoire of songs and a variety of presentations that are unusual, festive and attention getting. I highly recommend him!

He did a wonderful job at my mother's funeral. He was so easy to work with and made the event very special.

Honestly, I cannot imagine how this could have gone better. I'm not even sure where to begin. Not only did J.R. work with me on song selection, which would be table stakes - but he was there to collaborate on details like where, how and what to do in the order throughout the event. Not simply a true professional, but a consummately considerate person.
But all this is icing on the cake to EXCELLENT bagpiping. So impressive. Would work again with him in a heartbeat and recommend to anyone who's ever thought of having a bagpiper for a specific event.
When I first placed an ad for a bag pipe player, Mr. Arthur or as he prefers to be called , “ JR” , called me immediately. He was very respectful and offered sincere condolences. My Father was honored by a full military burial at National Arlington Cemetery. Not only did JR help me select songs we wanted, he navigated through what appropriate songs would be and explained how the succession of the service would happen. He had invaluable information on NAC as well as the music he would perform. He has two uniforms; and will give you visuals of them , including which one would be more appropriate.
Mr. Arthur is a retired Lieutenant Commander for the Navy . He has a rich history of all the armed forces . At the end of the service , he told the intriguing story of the challenge coins among the four military branches . He then bestowed one to my StepMother, my Mother and myself. I would highly recommend this amazing gentleman . The best of the very best.
I would love to have another opportunity to work with JR Arthur. He is an icon in his profession and we are honored to have been able to have him represent our group in our opening session of our annual convention. He chooses his performance costume from dozens of different amazing looks to compliment the particular event he is appearing in. He is totally focused and professional, plays beautifully (his repertoire is vast) and agreed to be paired with a snare drummer he'd never worked with before with a practice the night before the performance. They were a huge hit! Loved this guy.

JR Arthur was everything I hoped that took place in my home. He was beyond wonderful. He played beautifully and gave the history of every tune as I had requested. My company was amazed by his performance. He has a 5 star rating.

JR was amazing and did not disappoint. The blend of his music, humor, and history were perfect for our party. He communicated everything leading up to the party and we’d gladly have him back again

JR arrived early and in impeccable uniform. His music was perfect and everyone enjoyed his playing.
Bagpiper
JR was outstanding! He was there for song selection and provided opinions (which we took) on how to enhance the retirement ceremony. He communicates often and was a trusted partner throughout and after the event. Very personable, knowledgeable, and even historical!
You won't go wrong with choosing JR for your event!

It was great to have J.R. as our piper and partner for our wedding event. J.R. was dressed to the 9's and matched our event perfectly for the music we requested. Always a gentleman and professional and his music was tops. Well worth every penny spent for sure
Bagpiper
Piping support to my wife's funeral was done flawlessly. J.R. ensured that the piping complemented the funeral, and each piece played was appropriate for its place in the schedule. Everyone commented on how much they enjoyed J.R.'s piping . . as well as his uniform!
Highest recommendation!

Mr. Arthur was a pleasure to work with for my father-in-law's funeral at Quantico Nation Cemetery. He was extraordinarily helpful in organizing all aspects of the ceremony with the honor guard, and perfect in execution. Based upon my experience, I unhesitatingly recommend Mr. Arthur as the ONLY choice when considering hiring a professional and personable piper for ANY event; he does not disappoint. Thank you J.R. for your guidance, support, and flawless execution at our ceremony.

It was a true honor to play for your Father-in-Law's service.
Your Piper,
JR
J.R was absolutely wonderful to work with. He covered every detail and never hesitated to clarify or communicate via email, phone or text. During this difficult time he made it easy for us to choose songs that fit the ceremony by sending links and giving background on each. He was so charismatic and personal and used humor in the most perfect way that fit the family's needs. I would highly recommend him for any event.

Mr Arthur was very attentive and professional. He managed much of what needed to be done and decided at a very difficult time for us. His presentation was excellent.

We hired JR to play at my dad’s burial. I was so impressed with his professionalism and level of planning for the event. Working with him made a stressful time much easier as I knew we were doing something meaningful to honor my father. My whole family was put at ease by JR’s engaging personality. He ended up feeling like family by the time the service was over.

Mr. Arthur was booked for Sept. 11th Fireman's memorial and only ask to perform one song which was Amazing Grace, He proceeded with 59 seconds of play. I was leading the ceremony and when he stopped at that short period I waited for a brief time thinking that he was going to continue but he didn't. I ask you to view his performance on Facebook Luray Fire Department webpage to judge for yourself.
Bagpiper
Response from J.R. Arthur:
As to the length of the tune "Amazing Grace," it is but 45 seconds long. I did intentionally draw it out a bit (to the nearly 1 minute long period you noted), but in more than 22 years of piping at several hundred funerals and memorial services, I have never play it through more than once. I guess there might have been a bit of miscommunication as to what you wanted, but did not ask me to do and what I always do.
Now, as I said in my bid responding to your request for a piper, I was charging you a total of $275 due to the 9/11 date and the fact that you are a fire-department. My regular fee is $325 + $.50/mile each way for travel which would have been an additional $75. Furthermore, I wore my "Full Kit" formal piping attire for which I regularly charge an additional $50 and charged you nothing for that. The fee to non-uniformed services, would have been a total of $450. I even offered to play Taps on my bugle, for which, according to the contract I sent to you on 6 September, I charge an additional $50 and you declined. As you will remember, I indicated I would not charge for that either. I even purchased a firefighter's flag and displayed it on my pipes in honor of the occasion as can be seen in your video.
As you will remember, prior to the day of and on the day of, I asked you if you would like me to play any other tunes and you declined. None-the-less, I played about 4 tunes prior to the start of your formalities.
To be fair, I did what you contracted me to do and tried to do much, much more. You have posted an unwarranted and very unfair negative review of my performance, I kindly request that you withdraw it, both from GigSalad and from your Facebook page.
Mr. Arthur did an excellent job providing bagpipe music for our burial service. He was professional, but also personable and compassionate.

JR, thank you so much for piping our wedding. It was so easy working with you and your piping is incredible. I hope that we get a chance to work together again or at least see you perform again. Best decision I ever made. People! You wont go wrong with JR. Love you man. Your new friend, Brian.

Response from J.R. Arthur:
Brian, Thank you so much for that very kind review. Please pass on to Steve how much I enjoyed playing a Pipe and Guitar duo. I just hope anyone was able to hear the guitar over the noise of the pipes...
;-)
Most importantly, please pass my very best wishes on to Angela - (knowing your as I have come to, she just may need a whole bunch of "best wishes"!!)

JR was spectacular! Would definitely hire him again!

JR Arthur is beyond extraordinary as a piper. He played at my husband's internment at Arlington National Cemetery in the pouring rain. He greeted the mourners at the Administration Center before hand, and then mingled with the caisson and band soldiers at the grave site to tell them about the veteran they would be honoring. His performance was both moving and respectful. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend JR to anyone!

Great musician; fantastic person. Would be honored to have J.R. back at our next event. J.R. brought our event to a new level. EVERYONE loved him.

Response from J.R. Arthur:

We so enjoyed the presence and performance of Mr. Arthur. He was in full gear and played the songs we wanted to hear as well as adding commentary that was heart felt and with just the right amount of humor. Nice job!

Response from J.R. Arthur:
Ben,
Thank you for your review. I was honored to play for your Memorial Day dedication. It was an added bonus to find a USNA classmate and company mate of mine in attendance.
My best to you and your staff and residents.

My father, age 92, had Scottish heritage. I thought it only fitting to have a bagpiper at his memorial service. I found out about Mr. Arthur and was delighted that he was able to perform at my dad's service. Not only did he look impressive but the bagpipes added such a sense of dignity to our ceremony. Mr. Arthur was so kind and thoughtful in his selections and I have received numerous comments on how beautiful the service was and how special it was to have the bagpipes played. I hope I do not have another funeral soon but for any other occasions I would definitely seek out Mr. Arthur again.

Response from J.R. Arthur:
Martha,
Thank you so much for that very kind review. It was truly an honor to play for your Dad's service.

J. R. Arthur played the pipes for our Masquerade themed Scottish wedding. From the very beginning he was professional and really listened to what we wanted. He also had some great ideas of his own. He was personable and very striking in his full uniform. He even got together with us after the ceremony to give my new husband, a retired Marine, a challenge coin. He was amazing and loved by all!
Bagpiper
J. R. Arthur arrived just when we had arranged and it was just in time as our proceedings had moved quicker than we planned. We had several conversations about when to start, where to be, what to play to insure everything went smoothly. I would encourage anyone having a funeral to choose someone other than family to give visual or verbal cues. We were supposed to but simply forgot as we were "in the moment". J. R. Took over and carried through beautifully! His heart is in everything he does and you won't be dissapointed when the pipes are piping!

I was very impressed with J.R.Arthur. He called and spoke with me on the phone and was available to play for my Mom the very next day. It was a wonderful tribute to my mother. And he was in full kilt. AMAZING!!!

JR Arthur's performance capped a superb send-off for my parents. His rendition of Amazing Grace and other Scottish ballads broad tears to every guest and was inspirational to all who attended. He looked the part, his performance was perfect and he was gracious and informative throughout. Thank you again!!!!

Response from J.R. Arthur:
I thank you both for the honor of playing for your parents' service.
Mr. Arthur entertained at my husbands 80th birthday party. He played the bagpipes- a favorite of my husband. As well as playing , Mr. Arthur is a true entertainer - he captivated the guests with jokes, music, etc.
We could not have been more pleased.

What to Expect
Weddings: If desired, I play the bride down the isle and the happy couple back up the isle to various tunes as desired by the bride. I also play prior to the wedding service as guests arrive and after the ceremony prior to or during the reception as desired.
Funerals: I play many Scottish/Irish funerary tunes. Typically, in the church or at the interment site, I play off in the distance as the mourners are arriving. Then, as normally requested, as I march up to the altar, I play "Amazing Grace" and depart playing "Going Home." As requested, I play during the departure of the congregation.
St. Patrick's Day: I am available to play in Irish restaurants and bars to assist in their celebration.
Festivities, graduations, celebrations, memorials, other occasions: I am available to assist my hosts in selecting the music they would find most appropriate for their event. I play a large number of Scottish, secular, sacred, festive music.
Santa Claus: Yes, in addition to being a Scottish bagpiper, I am also Santa!! I have appeared in President's Park at the Ellipse in Washington D.C. in my photo, you may see the National Christmas Tree in the background, and, if you look closely enough, you can see the White House. Mrs. Claus and I are available to visit you and your children at any time of year, but particularly between early November and Christmas Day.
