My name is Joshua Frey. My approach to musical education, performance, and writing is based on my ability to create meaningful relationships with others. Because of this, the relationships I build with my students, audience, and employers are based off of respect, and understanding. These relationships then become a catalytic platform for the education, and interpretation of my multifaceted, and charismatic musical style. Along with years of private training, I have completed a bachelor of fine arts at York University, with a major in music, and a focus on the classical guitar.
As an experienced performer of various musical styles and disciplines, I am able to understand and adhere to the expectations of a variety of audiences. As a performer of classical guitar I understand that each gig will require a unique selection of repertoire. This requires a certain level of stylistic flexibility, which I have most predominately learned as a student of William Beauvais, within York University’s music program. As a performer of acoustic covers I understand that personal style is seconded by the understandable communication of popular songs in the social conscious. Finally as a performer of my own songs, it is the communication of my personal style that is trump.
As a student of the guitar since 2003, I have encountered my fair share of both helpful, and unhelpful teachers. As a teacher myself I am able to use this experience to inquire and create a positive learning environment. Where the practice, commitment, and love that is required to learn an instrument, is encouraged. To achieve this level of education, I balance what the student wants to learn, with the standard guitar syllabus. The goal of this is to create a well-rounded mental and technical understanding of the guitar, of the music they play, and finally to inspire a love for music. As an educator my ultimate goal is to inspire a lasting and informed passion for music, because only when a student is completely inspired can he/she learn something of substance.
My style of writing, in the broad genre of “singer-songwriter”, takes influence from artists ranging from classics such as Bob Dylan and Neil Young, to current artists such as Ben Howard and Ed Sheeran. Generally my writing is set for a small band consisting of myself on vocals and guitar/piano, with a second guitarist, a bassist, and a percussionist. Occasionally however this setting is diminished to simply a voice accompanied by a guitar, or augmented to include a full orchestra. Ultimately the goal of my music is to achieve a sense of pathos and create an honest connection with my audience. It does this through the use of simple melody and harmonic progression, in combination with complex ideas of love, family, home, and identity.
