The Joey Stempien Big Band (JSBB) is Rochester’s elite young big band, led by award-winning composer Joey Stempien. Founded out of the University of Rochester and Eastman School of Music community, JSBB brings together some of the region’s top student and emerging professional musicians. The group has already shared the stage with acclaimed artists such as Carlos Eiene, Jon Hatamiya, Bill Tiberio, and Jimmie Highsmith Jr., and its members are quickly establishing themselves on the national jazz scene.

JSBB specializes in high-energy performances of Joey's original music and arrangements of jazz standards, known for its visceral lyricism, colorful orchestrations, and modern edge. The band’s repertoire blends tradition and innovation, honoring the big band lineage while pushing it forward with fresh contemporary writing. With flexible pricing options and programs tailored for festivals, community concerts, and upscale venues alike, JSBB delivers unforgettable experiences for audiences of all kinds.

The Joey Stempien Big Band is a full 17 to 19-piece jazz orchestra (5 saxophones, 4 trombones, 4-5 trumpets, piano, guitar, bass, drums, and optional vibraphone).

Minimum performance area: 16 ft x 24 ft (or equivalent space to seat 17 musicians comfortably).

For indoor venues with good acoustics, the band can perform without full amplification. For larger venues or outdoor events, the band will provide a full PA system, or can work with house sound equipment. Power outlets near the stage for equipment is necessary. We only ask the venue provide 10 chairs.

Performance length: typically one to two 60-90 minute sets with intermission (flexible based on event).
Load-in/setup time: 60–90 minutes before performance; strike time ~30 minutes.
Outdoor events require a covered stage area for weather protection.
