Or Shovaly is a guitarist, composer and music educator based in New Orleans. He has gained recognition as a band leader and a sideman in the local scene for his soulful, groovy and rootsy sound steeped in the blues, funk, jazz and world music traditions.
After earning his degree from UNO in 2017, Or launched his own project, Or Shovaly Plus. The band channels the golden era of soul - jazz, delivering groovy rhythms and upbeat energy that is both vintage and familiar, while also incorporating improvisation that brings a new, vibrant energy to the crowd.
Centered on his guitar style, the ensemble suits a variety of settings - whether performing in intimate cocktail bars such as Salon Salon, elegant hotel lounges and private events including the Eliza Jane and the Four Seasons, or larger, danceable venues like Le Bon Temps Roule and Tipitina’s.
After leading the group for several years, in 2024, Or was 1 of 40 Louisiana-based artists awarded the Foundation for Louisiana’s 2024 WorldMakers Grant, which gave life to the band’s self-titled debut studio album, Or Shovaly Plus. The album is comprised by four original compositions and one arrangement for the New Orleans standard ‘St James Infirmary’ and features an organ trio joined by saxophone and trumpet.
The compositions feature simple and catchy, yet distinctive melodies over the background of rich harmonies and driven by unique bass riffs that groove hard. The album sets the perfect atmosphere for a party, event or even a scenic car ride at the end of a long day. It was written with the intent of uplifting spirits and make the body move.
As a sideman, Or currently enjoys fruitful collaborations with projects like the Joe Gelini (of Cha Wah) organ trio, Dr. Zach (New Orleans RnB project) and other projects in the New Orleans area.
From 2014 – 2023, Or also made significant contributions and gained recognition as the lead guitarist for the Afrobeat band Kumasi. He has played on their albums such as Togetherness (2015), Akoben (2018), and Live at the Marigny Studios (2021). Kumasi's music has garnered recognition, with multiple nominations for Gambit's Best of the Big Easy Award. Notably, they won the award for Best World/Latin music in both 2017 and 2019.
