I generally show up with a digital presentation, perhaps a small prop or two, and a big personality. I present well-researched information, but I also tell wild stories, banter with my audience, and make sure everyone's having a good time while they learn. No two sessions are exactly alike. My audience might end up writing horror stories or performing Shakespeare (according to what I've been asked for), but they'll always enjoy it.
I've worked as a journalist, teacher, editor, and writing coach for 20 years. I hold a master's degree in writing from USC, and my intellectual curiosity has led me into all kinds of strange adventures. I've met Hollywood stars and infamous felons. I've researched everything from how to date an ancient statue to how to stage a murder scene. I've always been the person who knows more than you expect about something you've never thought about, and I've probably got a joke about it, too.
I've written three books and am currently writing two more. I live in Costa Mesa with the world's most beautiful cat.
I generally have a Canvas or PowerPoint presentation, which will be on my laptop, a USB drive, and some kind of online backup. I'll need a projector, and to know in advance whether I'll be able to play sound or video. (I can present with or without that capability; I just need to know in advance whether I'll have it.)
I strongly prefer to wear a mask for medical reasons, though I can remove it if my audience needs to lip-read. Although I project my voice well, I will need amplification in larger rooms, especially if my audience contains people with hearing difficulties. Basically, I need a microphone in a large lecture hall, but not in a small classroom.
If I'm teaching a writing workshop or a Shakespeare seminar, I will need an approximate headcount in advance so I can bring an appropriate number of handouts or scripts. Access to a photocopier, especially for larger groups, is appreciated but not required. Please let me know in advance if my audience needs large-print versions of my materials.
