California Joe was a big hit in my daughter’s 6th birthday party. He is so good at interacting with kids and accommodating party theme. Kids absolutely love his performance! I would definitely consider him in my next kids event.

September 7, 2026Birthday party for young and old!
Richard was amazing. Knew how to work with a crowd of adults and 3 children under 8. His magic was exceptional. Easy to communicate with him prior to the event even when scheduling had to be moved due to weather. Thank you again!

What to expect
When I developed California Joe, I made the decision to respect the children's intelligence and find ways to perform the same type of magic I would for adults at the Magic Castle. I essentially took my corporate act and put a new skin on it. The real difference between performing for children and performing for adults isn't in the tricks I perform, it's the fact that kids don't want to "watch" a magic show, they want to be "in" a magic show. Knowing this has allowed me to perform very similar effects but in a fun, colorful way.
The other advantage of adapting magic effects designed for mature audiences for children is that it allows the adults in the room to enjoy the show too. I think of it as the "Disney factor:" children will enjoy it on one level and adults will enjoy it on a completely different level!
What I feel sets me apart as 'Richard The Magician' are the painstaking efforts I put into finding the most impactful magic and mentalism effects one can perform. Every effect can be a show closer!!
I also went to great efforts in both of my personas to be inclusive and respectful. My philosophy is if you can't be funny without offending someone, then you simply can't be funny.
About
Greetings! I am 'Richard The Magician' (ages 13+), but the kids know me as 'California Joe: The Explorer Magician' (12 and younger)!! I am a member of the Hollywood Magic Castle and have been performing for over 20 years. I have two theatre degrees which have served me well as a magician. My education has given me the skills necessary to create highly impactful performances and my years as a professional working magician have taught me how to best serve the needs of my clients. I want you to feel as though hiring me was the best decision you've ever made!
Why two personas? The obvious reason is because children respond much better to a softer, colorful character rather than a guy in a suit. It also helps to avoid brand confusion. I have two separate websites with different color schemes and art styles. It is no different than any other corporation with multiple brands. I have both of my personas mixed here on Gigsalad because I don't really have much of a choice. I feel it would be more confusing to have multiple profiles.
Some more history: I incorporated my business in 2003 as Magic Makers Entertainment. Originally from the state of Florida, I moved to Southern California in 2014 and became a magician member of the Hollywood Magic Castle in 2015. Also in 2015 is when I developed the character of 'California Joe: The Explorer Magician.' One of my mentors told me to "dress for the job you want." So, I started dressing like a version of Indiana Jones who can perform magic tricks!! LOL
Additional booking notes
I am completely self contained with a portable, wireless, PA system and my set of is fast. All that I require is a 6 by 4 foot playing space and a smiling, happy audience.

Set list
Trying to describe a magic trick is like trying to describe a song. You just have to experience it for yourself. What I can do is describe the layout of the over all birthday party experience.
1. Arrive 30-minutes early for set up
2. Have the kids sit on the floor in front of the performer
3. Perform a 30 to 45-minute magic show based on the package
4. Tricks vary depending on the type of show you purchase (Magic or Science)
5. Breakdown and pack certain show items
6. Beginning twisting balloon for the allotted amount of time depending on the package
7. Pack up and go home
Couldn't be simpler!
Setup requirements
For stage, parlor, and children's shows, a performing stage approx. 8ft wide * 6ft deep.
