Overview
I provide solo classical viola for receptions, weddings, restaurants, general background music, and more. I have also worked as a "strolling violinist" at a Rennaisance Faire. I specialize in Bach's solo cello suites, but have a wide repertoire, and am open to requests for other varieties of "classical" music.
Edward Violahands is the longtime soubriquet of classical violist Grace Young.

I cater my playing style to match the venue and level of audience involvement. I can provide sophisticated, soothing background music, or take center stage as a dynamic soloist, depending on the needs of my clients.
About
A recent transplant to Portland, I studied viola at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music with Karen Ritscher, and have had the honor of working with many other fantastic teachers. I am an individual contractor with the Walla Walla Symphony, and served as the Principal Violist of the Washington-Idaho Symphony for two years, receiving rave reviews from long time audience members. I am a longtime performer, and am looking to provide live classical music to a wide range of audiences.
Additional booking notes
Since my instruments are made of wood, I cannot play outdoor in excessively rainy or wet conditions. I play accousticly, and may require amplification depending on the noise level of the venue. I will need time for a short sound check if this is the case. I cannot provide my own amplification at this time.

My interpretive style has been influenced by my amazing teachers and the myriad of classical musicians I have listened to over the years, including Yuri Bashmet, William Primrose, Yo-Yo Ma and Joshua Bell.
