Mike Romano has been hammerin' away at the dulcimer since he was a lad of 17. His first experience with dulcimer came as a majestic surprise when he saw one as a kid at a folk festival at French Creek, set in the rolling hills of PA. Right then and there, he knew he had a calling. Ever since he began playing, the hammered dulcimer has been his musical partner in his adventures through life, journeying through swampy lows, mountainous highs, and thundering skies ringing with the vibrancy of all 64 strings playing the songs that became a soundtrack to his life. Through the years he's played solo and with bands of all shades and genres, never forgetting the Celtic and folk roots of his dulcimer playing, and deeply loving the intuitive art of his composition of music for solo dulcimer.
Dulcimer Mike's career has led him to play at all kinds of events, including block parties, weddings, farmers markets, craft fairs, gallery openings, conventions, theatrical productions, birthday parties, holiday gatherings, and festivals. He has made appearances all over the Delaware Valley at venues such as World Cafe Live, Penn's Landing, Atlantic City Convention Center, Rutgers University (Camden), and in Portland, OR at the Hawthorne Theatre. He has appeared on the recordings of numerous artists (most recently Philly's "A Fistful of Sugar"), and has played with a plethora of bands, his current membership being with Philly's psycho-celtic glam-blues band Sylvia Platypus!
Dulcimer Mike has hosted several open mic and music events, one at a coffeehouse in South Jersey, and then at a few different venues while living in Portland, Oregon! Currently he hosts a Song and Poetry share every third Sunday in West Philadelphia.
Most recently, Dulcimer Mike and Sylvia's bassist Ruchama Bilenky have initiated a dulcimer-bass duo project, which marries the resonance of the hammered dulcimer with the smooth voice of the electric bass, producing satisfying sounds of evocative and deep melodic tones. Recordings to come soon.
