I work as a solo fiddling entertainer and am available for a variety of occasions, often as a strolling violinist and mandolinist. Whether for a wedding, campfire show, museum, library, senior community, winery, or any number of occasions, you'll be pleased with my interactive style. Your guests will be thoroughly entertained. I am also available with a duo, trio or foursome as a bluegrass or folk band depending on your budget. My original solo show 'Romancing the Fiddle' (or Catgut Strings & Rattlesnake Tales) is full of comedy, folklore, stories, fiddle classics (with a PowerPoint slide show). I also offer a campfire show for young folks sharing songs from our rich American tradition.
Romancing the Fiddle did a great job. Dave is a very talented Musician . He also brought two of his friends that were equally as talented, easy to work with and enthusiastic about our show. I would highly recommend Romancing the Fiddle and anyone he recommends bringing with him. Our show was a complete success!!
We hired David for a Gold Rush themed Halloween party, during a power shutdown no less, and he gave an amazing performance by lamplight! Perfect ambiance for the theme, witb a spooky story or 2 thrown in as well. Everyone loved him! Very personable and talented guy who will give you great value....he even taught some of the guests how to play the violin a tiny bit. Absolutely would recommend and hire again!
Dave Rainwater lends incredible ambience, charm, and historical meaning to any event through his music. His participation in our Transcontinental Railroad event at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento added all these things. An experienced and easygoing professional!
Response from Romancing The Fiddle:
Thank you, Tracy! It was truly an honor to participate in this historic event!
Our beachside birthday party for an Irish Expat was memorable for the excellent fiddle playing, engaging style, gentle humor, and intermittent storytelling. Dave gathered to the crowd, who smiled throughout, tapped their feet and made requests that he fulfilled with charm and a smile. I have rarely received so much positive feedback for an event. He also was responsive and organized and made the job of engaging him so easy. This is an easy one. Contact Dave today.
What a treat it was to have Dave at our St. Patty's Day event! He totally rocked the theme of the party and even played some Celtic music. As a performer he gets an A+. He's really great at reading the crowd and filling in the gaps with music or a little story-telling. Our event had both kids and adults so he was able to please both crowds. His instruments are truly unique and so is his style. Would recommend him for your event if you are looking for something unique and rich in entertainment!
David was amazing with our guests! We hired him as a strolling fiddler for our Victorian Holiday Magical Moment. David walked around and played music to all of our customers. He would stop and play to individual families and kids. It was sweet watching the kids dance around and listen intently to the music. I would recommend him to anyone who needs an outstanding fiddler player with great people skills! Oh and he played the Mandolin too, what an amazing guy!
Mr. Rainwater was just amazing. His music was beautiful, both with the violin and mandolin. He walked the room and engaged the crowd. He took requests and entertained without being too intrusive. David is kind, genuine, and very professional. We will be calling him for future events and I recommend him to anyone looking for a musician/performer.
Dave was a great gentleman and easy to work with. He mingled with our guests and played great any tunes that were requested of him. We thoroughly enjoyed having him at our event!!
Dave was one of the best parts of our wedding, he played beautifully and really added a wonderful element to our evening. The guests loved his narrating classic tunes like the devil went down to Georgia and he even stayed a little longer to play our first dance tune which was so much better than what we’d planned. We can’t thank Dave enough!!!
We had David on board to play at our wedding reception this past weekend, a long journey from California to Wallowa County in Oregon. We were delighted to have him! David also played at our wedding ceremony, something we had not originally planned on, but decided on doing once he suggested attending and playing there also. We are so glad he made that suggestion! He played a beautiful tune there, and I so wish I had a recording of that moment! We didn't have any space for dancing at our reception venue (on purpose, really) and it was a lot of fun to see David entertaining our guests through the night by strolling about and engaging with them. I appreciated his gentle, patient demeanor even through the chaos just prior to the reception going 'live'. He took care of himself and got a feel for the event at different stages. He played the violin and his exceedingly beautiful mandolin, educating guests on the history of the music and instruments. I would heartily recommend him to anyone in need of a fiddler! Thank you David Rainwater for the unforgettable memories.
I hired Romancing the Fiddle to play for my father, who is ill and recovering in a nursing facility. My father has a love for the violin and this was a special treat to lift his spirits. Romancing the Fiddle was very accommodating, he got back to me immediately and contacted me for more information. He not only brought three instruments (violin, viola & mandolin), but he also sang, which my parents loved. He went above and beyond to make it a special experience for my father.
He played beautiful while mingling with the guest.
The Folsom Historic District Association could not have picked a better strolling musician for our special event. We highly recommend him to anyone looking for an entertaining and wonderful musician and person to make their event shine!
Look no further if you want to bring a piece of lively folk Americana to your event. Dave Rainwater sure did romance his fiddle while he teamed up with John Massey, another award-winning musician. John is a folk acoustic, guitar player who has the pickin’ talent that easily rivals the great Chet Atkins. The two have a repertoire that will engage every party attendee, and they did! The yesteryear music is filled with fun showmanship, professionalism, and an enthusiasm to complete you party atmosphere for any generation. Dave Rainwater is a master fiddler. Absolutely believe all the glowing reviews and articles you read about him. He plays everything from down-home bluegrass to Western folk, to country, and MORE! Wait ‘til you hear him! He’ll unpack some memories for sure-- maybe a song that is reminiscent of your great-grandfather's whistling-while-he-works self entertainment, or that six-year-old's wide-eyed excitement when she hears a song that she just learned in music class. This duo was everything we'd hoped.
Initially we hired Dave. He was the one who suggested adding John. This speaks directly to the unpretentious graciousness of Dave and his willingness to meet our vision. He did all the organizing. Brought all the equipment necessary--including a range of instruments. I can't say thank you enough for his sweet demeanor, enormous talent, and his willingness to perform for a smaller group despite his big name draw.
Dave and John were more than an addition to our event. Those strings are what roped us in and created the unmistakably unique atmosphere that marked this party as one that all of our guests will remember forever. There wasn't a guest in the room (including our caterer) who didn't want to get his card.
We can't recommend them enough!
He was on time, friendly, happy and really enjoys playing and telling stories. He fit in perfectly at the venue. He played several instruments, and played them very well. We loved it - he was great!
Dave Rainwater has been playing our Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival for the last 7 years and always delivers a fun, professional performance. His repertoire of thousands of songs and his wonderful way with the public make him a welcome and valuable part of our event.
The Morgan Hill Mushroom Mardi Gras has had the great pleasure of having Dave Rainwater as one of our strolling entertainers during our festival for the past 6 years. He provides professionalism and great entertainment at a reasonable cost and is a huge hit with our festival goers.
We have hired Dave for many years as a strolling musician on the excursion trains at Railtown 1897 State Historic Park. He has developed quite a following over the years, as can be evidenced by his many accidental appearances in the youtube videos posted by park visitors. Dave is personable, responsive, and truly connects with people through his music. He takes pride in his craft and it shows.
I have also seen him perform in his one-man show, and as a member of another well-known musical group, and have always been impressed with his versatility. He is a skilled and inspiring musician-- love seeing him perform!
Dave Rainwater is an exceptional musician and entertainer. He sold out the house and was called back 3 times with standing ovations. With his stories and his fiddles, mandolin, viola, and guitar he leads his audience on a journey to the roots of American music. Dave Rainwater is a National Treasure. His music is fantastic and his stories are marvelous. Do not miss this show!

What to Expect
My passion to play music started at the early age of 15. I treat each opportunity to play for folks with the same passion. As a strolling entertainer I interact with your guests with fun, bringing smiles and laughter and hopefully lifting their spirit at each moment. If in a campfire show or stage show, my audiences always enjoy toe tapping melodies, some of America's classic folk songs (and a few of my own originals), historical anecdotes, American folklore and all with a touch of humor! The fact is I enjoy all things violin and play from a repertoire that includes all styles whether classical, Latin, Italian, bluegrass, old timey, cowboy, folk, jazz, blues plus I've even been known to throw in a rock and roll tune on the mandolin. In my school shows for young folks called "Musical Treasures From the Gold Rush Era" I demonstrate and play most of the common folk instruments which include: fiddle/violin, mandolin, guitar, banjo/banjolin, harmonica, auto harp, Appalachian dulcimer and spoons. When out and about I always have a few sets of spoons for the young folks who love to provide some rhythm while I play a toe tapping fiddle hoedown. It's always fun.
Dave Rainwater is a seasoned fiddling entertainer working table side or strolling at craft fairs or at any special occasion. He also presents an original one man show a delightful mixture of comedy, American folklore, storytelling and music. 'Romancing the Fiddle' was launched in 2009. After two sold out theater performances in Sonora and three standing ovations at each, it's a guarantee audiences will love 'Catgut Strings and Rattlesnake Tales' (for the more hillbillyish crowd) or 'Romancing the Fiddle' (for the more genteel set). Dave is a widely known fiddling entertainer, performing in large part from America's own traditional repertoire with a mix of classical, jazz, blues, country and bluegrass favorites. His shows are always full of history, comedy and musical pieces Americans remember and love. Dave also has presented his original show 'Musical Treasures From the Gold Rush Era & America's Frontier Days' to schools and libraries since 1998. A champion and award winning fiddler, he is a touring member of the world famous New Christy Minstrels and has also performed with The Black Irish Band, Michael Martin Murphy and many others. He is a blue ribbon winner at the country's oldest and largest fiddle contest in Galax, Virginia, and in 2013, he was awarded a lifetime achievement award at the California Auto Harp Gathering. In April of 2018 he was given a Congressional Certificate of Recognition for his contribution to western music at the annual Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival.
