Torch diva Val Peterson was performing at a club in Hollywood when saxophonist Paul Frederick introduced himself and ended up sitting in with her band. Both vintage music lovers, soon BIG LUCKY was born and hasn't stopped since. Blending influences such as Cole Porter, Artie Shaw, Irving Berlin, Ella Fitzgerald, and so many more from the jazz age, the two conceptualized a band that could bring a... modern sensibility to the sophisticated popular American music of the past.
BIG LUCKY began as a five piece jazz combo, playing locally in their home Los Angeles and across the country in New York, Las Vegas, San Fransisco, Orlando, El Paso, and up and down the west coast. After adding a horn section, a patron and aficionado of rare Gatsby era orchestral jazz commissioned BIG LUCKY to record their album The Venture Capital Follies of 1929. Calling upon his skills as a film composer and arranger, Paul created transcriptions for an 18 piece orchestra, and Val studied the execution common to singing in the 20’s. Critiques of the album praised it’s attention to detail, superlative sound quality and excellent musicianship. It’s release led to gigs for BIG LUCKY at venues such as the landmark Biltmore hotel in downtown LA, as well as guest appearances on hit HBO shows Entourage and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
BIG LUCKY is currently recording a new album, Around the World with Big Lucky. In addition to their love of jazz, Val sings in five languages and the duo share a love of movie themes from the 50’s and 60’s. Around the World with Big Lucky blends European, folk, and gypsy elements with Mancini-esque orchestrations to transport us on a musical journey straight into a world of martini chic. The album is an evolution of their project Euro Trio, unapologetically romantic and adding the formidable talents of accordion virtuoso Nick Ariondo to their musical recipe.
