2018 in Chico, a gig for a car club.

Overview

Sometimes the party needs a show, and sometimes just background music. You can usually make the call.
I can do wandering acoustic, for small venues. I can provide a duo including guitarist and music sound system, with singing as well.

While fast, solo bluegrass banjo is a strength, I also do folk songs on banjo and guitar with some tasteful guitar and singing. I also love opening for acts!

Every party and event has a different vibe, a different need. One of my strengths is fitting in to whatever you have going, as long as you need quality acoustic music with gusto!

A truly professional entertainer

Banjo Jack is, first and foremost, a talented banjo player, but equally importantly, he is a charming entertainer who not only adapts to his audience, but to fellow musicians in the room. He transformed our 20-person get-together from a potentially awkward evening, into a united family experience. Communications leading up to the event were excellent, and he was on-time, reliable, courteous and professional at all times. (I wish I had a negative or two to make this more balanced, but there were none.)
BTW, GigSalad has been great too - very easy to use, and in this instance, entirely successful!

What to expect

I'm mighty tall and can use the banjo or guitar dynamically to attract attention, assist in MC duties, or simply be a background instrumentalist. The banjo is audible from far away, even at low volumes. my specialties are grown up shows. I can bring a guitar and or/harmonica as well. Folk bluegrass and some beatles tunes can be a possible party sing along or round out an evening of gentle acoustic music.

About

I've been playing since 1973. I am trained in bluegrass and can jam with most country or bluegrass bands. I love to play acoustically for smaller rooms, though I can bring a sound system for larger venues. I do not do 'children's music' per se, but my act is clean and fun and I have done tons of children's parties. I love to relate to audiences of all ages.

I have taught banjo since 1977. I taught full time six of those years and for the rest had the occasional student.

In Hong Kong, I played at Hong Kong Disney from (phone number hidden)4 as a part of the Wagon Show at Grizzly Gulch, and as a roving musician, a position that was created for me by the musical team.

Additional booking notes

I love a stage, but do not require it. I do need space that is secured so I can leave my instrument(s) without worry. Usually that is a corner of the room or in another room from the main party. I like a power outlet. I have an amplifier that works great on battery power. However, it sounds better for longer plugged in.
In many situations, banjo is best heard live- like a living room or a bar of a certain small size. If you need it, I can amp it.

Influences and inspiration

I listen to John Hartford, the Beatles, Taj Majal and a host of great banjoists including Reno, Scruggs, Fleck and Stanley. My style is as mush derivative of theirs as it has to be but my mistakes make the music uniquely my own.

Setup requirements

I can play with your system or bring my own. I have a battery powered amp but its nicer plugged in.
