Backwater Township

Backwater Township is a project based out of Montreal, QC that began in 2017 with a vision of challenging a musical genre marred by elitism and gatekeeping. Backwater Township isn’t a band, it’s a collective of misfits and outliers pushing their way into the jazz music scene. Founded by Mi’gmaq bassist and composer Corey Thomas in 2017, since then Backwater Township has released 4 albums. The inaugural self-titled EP in 2018 marked the inception, paving the way for their followup albums, "Backwater Township II” (2022), “Backwater Township III” (2023) & “Backwater Township Live” (2024).

Corey Thomas, earned a 2019 nomination for the Oliver Jones Award, a testament to his remarkable musicianship. Commanding attention with compelling performances, Backwater Township has performed on the stages of renowned festivals, including Festival Présence Autochtone ((phone number hidden)4), Festival International de Jazz de Montréal (2019), Sunset on Somerled (2019), Festival Jazz et Blues de Saguenay (2023), Jazz On Walostoq Festival (2023) and Place Des Art’s Micro Ouvert (2024). Backwater Township has performed alongside major musical acts such as Mdou Moctar (2019), Beatrice Deer (2024), & PAKT: Alex Skolnick & Percy Jones (2025).

The band's musical prowess extends beyond live stages, with their compositions featured on notable CBC Radio shows such as Minotan and the Saturday Night Jazz Show. Backwater Township has also secured a place on influential Spotify curated playlists, including Fresh Finds Jazz, Jazz Bops and The Jazz Collection.
Backwater Township will be releasing their follow up album in 2026 as well as a Canada wide tour that summer. Backwater Township persists in enchanting audiences with vibrant, energetic performances.
