Overview

Award-winning spoken word artist, teaching artist, actor, and a community activist who has been featured on Bush-connect, The White House and the Nobel Peace Prize Forum. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Al-Jazeera, and the project dubbed The Youth/Dhallinyarada community. As a member of the Minnesota Spoken Word Association, Abdi is dedicated to impacting literacy and youth leadership through the art of spoken word. Abdi is also a Member of the Minneapolis Arts Commission and currently lives and works in Minneapolis, MN.

About

Abdi Phenomenal is an award-winning Somali poet, playwright, creative director whose work explores the misplaced displaced and replaced stories of the African Diaspora. Abdi's mixture of poetry, prose, and dramatic monologues deal with strength and vulnerability, movement and migration. He was featured a artist at the White House, Bush Foundation, Bushcon, Minneapolis Arts Institute, De Paul University “SJP, Weisman Arts Museum, Global Stories in Copenhagen Denmark where he led the Danish Somali Storytelling Project. His past production includes an  ensemble produced in Minneapolis, dubbed,  "Disarmed, but Dangerous" 2010. “Concerning Our Lives” 2012 “The Chronicles Of The Diaspora” (2015) “Siyaasada Maanta” The Politics Of Today” 2017.

His work was published by The advocates for Human Rights and Minnesota Historical Society. Previously Abdi served on the board of Made Here and was appointed by the Mayor and City Council to serve on the Minneapolis Arts Commission to advocate for arts related issues the city of Minneapolis and engage artists in critical thinking and art making around City and urban issues and to increase artists’ and planners’ ability to facilitate community interaction and work collaboratively with the public to foster positive change in the quality and trajectory of social discourse about the city’s urban future. Abdi is also a consultant at Intersection Consulting company, a Minneapolis based, which uses a focused combination  of culture and creativity to transform brands.
