Verboten

About

Verboten was founded in 2010 by drummer Greg Baker and former guitarist Roger Carson, both whose backgrounds were grounded in 80's metal, both hair and heavy metal. Baker explains, "The idea was just to get together and jam and 'see how it went'.

It went well. :-)

Verboten, which is German for "Forbidden or Prohibited", was born out of a desire to cover those gems from the 70's, 80's and 90's that were radio friendly rock songs and give them a new sound while introducing them to a younger audience and also catering to those in the 30 and above crowd who remember the songs they grew up on.

Baker explains "We didn't want to play the same songs everyone else covers in bars. I like Jimmy Buffet and the Fabulous Thunder birds but don't expect Verboten to cover Margaritaville or "Mustang Sally". " We want people to say wow, they're covering that song from that group?" Who does that?

After a number of lineup changes the band has solidified itself as a solid quartet with the lineup of guitarist Jason Kalinoski. A native of Ohio, he has a love of 80's hair metal bands like Dokken, White Lion, Skid Row and of course the early 80's stuff centered around the sounds of Van Halen, Scorpions, AC/DC, etc..

Bass player Kyle Caswell is the 'youngster' in the group but is years ahead of his time in terms of his playing and appreciation and knowledge of the songs covered, many recorded before he was born. "We give him a hard time and yes we haze him quite a bit, but its all in good fun", said Baker. "I told him I have a callous on my foot older than him." Caswell's presence has provided a great bottom end to Verboten's rhythmic onslaught and his energy has been contagious within the whole group.

Singer Russ Bruce is the quintessential front man with the "pipes" but more importantly the personality to lead Verboten on vocals.
Having fronted a number of other bands mainly playing originals, Bruce answered an ad on craigslist somewhat reluctantly and the rest they say is history.

As Baker explains, "He walked in and I thought he certainly had the persona and the look of a lead singer, I just hoped he could sing too!" Bruce quickly impressed with his first audition with his power to cover bands and singers most cover bands won't touch. "He's fearless", explains Baker. "He'll go for ranges and surprise even himself sometimes" As Bruce even jokes, "the 5th member of the band is his ego".

You want straight ahead rock you can get up on the floor and dance to or even maybe bang your head or shake your fist to, come see a show!
