Petra Sovcovova

About

Petra Sovcovova is a first-generation American of Czech descent, born and raised in Seattle, Washington. In her youth, she performed at multiple baroque festivals as a lead soloist for Faure's Requiem, Mozart's Requiem, and John Rutter's Requiem, Gloria and Magnificat. Soon after, she began studying more advanced oratorio works such as Mozart's Exsultate Jubilate, which she performed at local venues and in the Slovak Republic.

While attending Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Petra's roles of Gertrude and the Dew Fairy in Engelbert Humperdink's Hansel and Gretel were well-received by the faculty, as was her compelling scene work from Antonín Dvorák's Rusalka, which had not been performed at the school for nearly ten years because of the linguistic difficulty of the opera. Other scene work while attending Cornish included Fiordiligi from Mozart's Cosi fan tutte, Zerlina from Mozart's Don Giovanni, and Rosina from Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro.

After Cornish, Petra focused on intensive role study with a fourty-five year veteran of the operatic stage. Over the past year, Petra has worked tirelessly to gain and perform the roles of Micaela, from Georges Bizet's Carmen; Musetta and Mimi, from Giacomo Puccini's La bohème; Rosina, from Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro; Liu, from Puccini's Turandot; and Marguerite, from Charles Gounod's Faust. Extensive scene work with her current mentor includes Salome, from Jules Massenet's Herodiade; Violetta, from Guiseppe Verdi's La traviata; Lakmé, from Léo Delibes' Lakmé; Dorabella, from Mozart's Cosi fan tutte; Pamina and the Second Lady, from Mozart's Die Zauberflöte; Susanna, from Mozart's Le nozze di figaro; Cio-Cio San, from Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly; and Liu, from Giacomo Puccini's Turandot.

During her current studies, Sovcovova has performed pieces outside the operatic canon; she has worked with British composer Andrew Keeling, has sung for humanitarian benefits for the homeless at multiple venues in Seattle, and has even had the honour to perform for the First Secretary of the Czech Embassy, the Honourary Czech and Slovak Consuls, and the Czech Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.

Petra recorded eight operatic arias with Canadian Juno nominated and award winning artist/producer Tom Keenlyside and also made her international debut in Italy singing Rosina in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro and Dorabella in Mozart's Cosi fan Tutti.

Recently, Sovcovova performed at the Moore Theater in Seattle as the Widow Corney in the musical Oliver! and will be making an encore appearance in the same role this year.

Currently, Sovcovova resides in Vancouver BC, Canada with her wonderful husband and two cats, she is also an active teacher to young opera and classical artists.

Stage/Setup Requirements:
I will require access to a piano, or one can be provided for a fee.

Additional Notes:
As a professional musician I am constantly working with other performers - specifically, I have hand picked accompanists (pianists) who attend all small venues with me (This does not include full music productions and/or opera productions). Please know that though I am very eager to make your event wonderful, I will need access to a piano in order to offer you the full extent of my arias and songs (I can supply a full size electric piano for an additional fee). Unfortunately, I do not sing to previously recorded music, everything I do is live and of exceptional quality.
