I began my storytelling career by enthralling classmates with “scary stories” in the 6th grade. Although encouraged by my teachers, I put aside my off-the-cuff performances to further my education. I earned a bachelor of music in elementary education with a minor in drama at Marylhurst College in 1974. Teaching only lasted a year and three months before I entered the workforce in a more mundane capacity. In 1986 I joined the Society for Creative Anachronism, a medieval/renaissance recreation group. A few years later I took up storytelling again, this time as a “bard” specializing in traditional, mythological and epic tales from early cultures – mainly the British Isles, Russia and Italy. I have won various bardic competitions within the SCA and now perform with storytelling groups and guilds outside the society. I am active with the Portland Storytellers Guild and have done performances for OMSI, Estacada Library, One World Peace Foundation, Longview Storytellers Network, Oregon Counseling Associates, and various schools. Now in retirement, I wish to expand my storytelling business doing more of what I truly love.
Research is something I also love, so planning a party presentation on a specific theme is a delightful challenge. I am also willing to adapt the stories of others to spoken word presentations. For example, for an adult party I would be happy to tell stories about the guest of honor if provided with them, on behalf of those who may not care to speak. I also have a huge collection of traditional tales of magic, animals, heroes, fairytales, etc that I have accumulated of 20 years. I will also appear in costume (usually medieval/renaissance) when appropriate.
I am willing to provide a story selection lasting up to 45 minutes at any given event. Stories are appropriate for children 5 and up, all the way to adults. Specialties: Medieval/renaissance tales, Halloween!, animal tales, historical tales. And of course, I'll try any theme you can come up with!
