Afrocuba Band was formed in 2001 by John Acevedo (musical director and bass player), Kevin Ortiz (Timbalero), Mario Duque (Pianist), and Alex Dieguez (Conga). Afrocuba's original repertoire consisted primarily of classic, old school, Cuban music and, in 2004, slowly evolved to include Puerto Rican and Colombian influences as well. Afrocuba Band has gained much popularity among salsa dancers in the New Jersey/North Jerseyand New York City area and has gained an impressive following of fans.
In 2004, Afrocuba Band began adding more members to the band, thereby facilitating more complex musical arrangements to include multi brass, bongo, and several more vocalists and percussionists. If there is a need for a Cuban Band to spice up a party or event, Afrocuba Band is ready for the job!
Afrocuba Band plays covers from great Latin Legends of the 70s. Some of these include: Tito Puente, Ray Barreto, Ruben Blades, Fania-All-Stars, Ismael Rivera, Cheo Feliciano, El Gran Combo, Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez, Tommy Olivencia, Frankie Ruiz, Ismael Miranda.
