The 3 M’s of a Quinceañera: Music, Menu, & Memories

By Shirene Chehrazi

For many girls growing up in Latino cultures, their Quinceañera is a special day that they dream about for years. You’ve been tearing pages from magazines and pinning your heart out for months and months. It’s time to finally make some decisions and let the party planning begin! It’s your fifteenth birthday – a day that marks your transition from childhood to becoming a young woman. So, let’s celebrate!

Quinceañera celebrations vary from family to family. Some families choose extravagance and go over the top with decorations, food, entertainment, and gifts, while others choose a more low-key celebration with just a few guests and DIY decor. Whichever way you decide, it will still be a memorable night of food, fun and dancing in honor of you!

Traditionally, the birthday girl will arrange a court of 14 people, representing the last 14 years of childhood. Chosen members of the court will be dressed to impressed in matching gowns and tuxedos or suits. The court will spend weeks learning dances and gracefully perform the valz, or waltz, just prior to the father-daughter dance.  Make sure these dances go off without a hitch by hiring a Choreographer to teach your group the steps.

The Music

Selecting the music for your big day doesn’t have to be complicated. Music should be chosen based on your personal taste – it is your night, after all. Go modern and hire a DJ to play all of your favorite tunes and announce your grand entrance. Make a playlist of must-play songs and let guests request party hits throughout the party. Keep things traditional with a live Mariachi Band, Latin or Salsa Band. If you want a more classic feel, consider hiring a Classical Ensemble, Guitarist, Harpist or Pianist to set the mood.

The Menu

First things first – much like a wedding, it’s all about the cake. Whether you prefer classic or bold and creative, be prepared with style ideas when you’re searching for the perfect Cake Decorator. Go all out with an oversized tier cake or keep it simple with a smaller cake and cupcake combination.

There are many options when it comes to the food. You’ve got your hands pretty full by now with all of the other delicate details so leave the cooking up to a Caterer. Plan the menu with your parents to ensure some of your favorite foods make the cut. You’ll need to decide if you want a sit-down dinner with a full Wait Staff or a serve-yourself buffet style dinner. Another option is to skip the meal and keep it casual with a spread of hors d’oeuvres.

The Memories

This is a once in a lifetime event, so you’ll want to soak in every moment while it’s happening. Having a Photo Booth is a fun way to capture memories for both you and your guests, and the photos double as party favors! Friends and family will surely snap pictures for you, but if you still have room in the budget, hiring a professional Photographer or Videographer ensures capturing every moment of your special day.
You’ve been waiting for this day for as long as you can remember. Take a moment to really enjoy it – all of it. Savor the food, soak in the music, keep every card, and take a few minutes at the end of the night to write down some of your favorite moments. We’re wishing you the happiest of birthdays! We hope you have the Quinceañera of your dreams.
