Recently selected for the Kennedy Center's 20th Annual Betty Carter Jazz Ahead international residency (Washington D.C.) Chloe Youtsey (pronounced Yahtzee) is making her mark on the local Austin scene. A singer-songwriter, with a taste for jazz, oldies, R&B, bossa nova, and "tasteful pop," Chloe's solo career has been marked by 6 years of performing for weddings, restaurants, professional gatherings, private parties, jazz cafes, as well as being an active teacher and musical theater director! Whether you are looking for soundscape to the good old days, a wide variety of genres, or the favorites of the holidays, look no further! Chloe can perform solo or present a duo/trio.
Upon hearing Chloe perform at a local restaurant one afternoon, my then fiance and I knew we had to have her sing at our wedding reception. Chloe has a beautiful, soulful, sultry, sweet, tone to her voice and it is always a treat to hear her perform. She is a talent that will surely go places! Very professional, very courteous!
Chloe was an AMAZING addition to my Wedding day! When she sings, chills. When she plays, tears. From the very beginning she was always easy to communicate with and seemed to be eager to get my vision so that she could compose a set that was fitting for the mood. She even went as far as coordinating the event with my DJ independently as to make the music of the evening an almost non-existant detail I had to worry about (which is so helpful for a wedding event)! Chloe ended up assembling a jazz quartette for an hours worth of excellent music fitting for all ages while we all ate dinner! My husband and I agree it was one of our favorite parts of the reception. Our grandparents even made it a point to contact us after the wedding to tell us how much they enjoyed knowing some of the music Chloe performed at our wedding!! Our friends and family who attended the wedding made more comments about the dinner music than the dinner itself! Chloe exceeded our expectations, we are recommending her to everyone looking for live music!
Chloe offers everything you could ever hope for in a performer including a stunning voice, inspiring stage presence, and professional outlook. She's also very friendly and always a pleasure to work with. I cannot recommend her enough to anyone who is looking for a truly 5-star experience.
Price Range: $150 and up
Gig Length: 30 - 180 minutes
What to Expect
Me, my keys (electronic/grand,) microphone, all the works.
I need about 6x3 feet of space to fit comfortably, anything additional is a bonus.
Takes me about 15 minutes to set up.
I have over 150 songs that I cycle through, sometimes if a guest asks for something on the spot, I whip it up as we go and invite them to sing along if they're friendly enough.
I play music that is perfectly appropriate for a rainy day and a coffee mug, a glass of wine and a pair of sparkly alluring eyes, an open Bible and notebook, or a talkative atmosphere where the music isn't supposed to overpower. I know when to sing under a din or be heard through a crowd, depending on what's needed.
It's been reported that my voice has cured hangovers and calmed fledgling arguments....but those are just reports.
"Your daughter is playing music I didn't teach her. You should probably put her in piano lessons."
At the age of five, Chloe Youtsey (pronounced, "Yahtzee") had picked out basic children's tunes on her family's upright piano, transferring them over to xylophones within earshot of her preschool teacher. For the next ten years, she received piano lessons on and off from various teachers in Virginia, Germany, Turkey, and Japan.
Growing up in an Air Force military home meant frequent moves and many years of informal training. Nevertheless, she was always at the piano. While living in Turkey, she took to composing her first song, accompanying herself and challenging her ear further. By the time she settled back in the US after eight years of consecutive assignments overseas, it was her junior year of high school. Grafton High (Yorktown, Virginia) offered well-rounded theater and music departments, offering her my first opportunity for performances in musical theater, marching band, and jazz band.
By the end of her senior year of high school, jazz had become her biggest ear worm. Until then, she had never heard of Chick Corea, Count Basie, Chet Baker, or Miles Davis, and the list goes on.
Two days before her first day of college, she discovered her new school already had a vocalist in the instrumental oriented jazz studies program. Without being yet accepted into the music college, she decided to go for it, and pursue a jazz vocal degree.
In May 2017, she graduated from James Madison University with a Bachelor's of Music in Jazz Studies and Performance for voice, under the close guidance of jazz faculty Bob Hallahan, Chuck Dotas, while receiving complementing classical vocal training under mezzo-soprano Carrie Stevens.
In May 2018, after having moved to Austin and getting engaged, she attended Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead residency with 23 other musicians, under the guidance of Jason Moran (p.), Ralph Peterson (dr.), DeeDee Bridgwater (voice), Reuben Rogers (bass), Mark Shim (sax), Mark Whitfield (guit.), Xavier Davis (p.), and Darren Barrett (trump.). The two-week program culminated in three nights of performances at the Kennedy Center performing the resident artists' original work.
She is located somewhere between Austin and Virginia (depending on the time of year.) She divides her time between composing, teaching, performing, and directing children's musicals.
Her favorite musical influences are Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, Gregory Porter, Sarah Vaughan, and Nancy Wilson.
She is available as a soloist or can pull together a three to four piece combo. She takes selections out of the American Songbook, soulful pop and R&B, oldies but goodies, bossa nova, and her originals.
Additional Booking Notes
I provide all my own sound equipment. House monitors or PAs provided at location are wonderful, but not expected. Use only a single amp for keys and single amp for vocals.
