Triosophy is a jazz trio that performs a wide variety of repertoire, including jazz standards, pop/rock classics and original music. With an instrumentation of saxophone, double bass and guitar, we have a unique, subtle, and intimate sound which is perfect for many different events. We perform with our own unique voice, bringing new life to standards and classic songs that we all know. With our extensive repertoire, we can perform long sets if needed, but still keeping it fresh and inventive through our improvisations. We also use a large dynamic range, playing funk and danceable pop classics as well as emotional jazz ballads.
Erik Van Dam is an improviser and composer specializing in soprano, alto, tenor saxophones and flute. Having studied with the highly acclaimed Joe Lovano and later Hal Crook, Erik has gone on to draw inspiration from many influences, including Lovano, Sam Rivers, and Eric Dolphy. Erik has crafted a sound of his own; stemming from shapes, colors as well as the traditional jazz language. He has also spent time working and performing with Bob Moses, Bill Lowe, and Stan Strickland.
Erik has performed internationally in Tokyo, Paris, Jamaica, and Bulgaria. Erik currently performs at many venues and clubs, and has been featured on numerous albums of local artists. In addition to being a musician, Erik is an avid, creative painter and sculptor who teaches art professionally in a local school system.
Guitarist and award winning composer, Jim Robitaille, has performed and or recorded and shared the bill with Dave Liebman, Karl Berger, Bob Moses, Joe Beck, Gerry Gibbs, Santi Debriano, Julian Lage, Esperanza Spalding, Oscar Stagnaro, Kate McGarry, pop singer Billy Gilman and the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars, and has appeared on over 30 recordings as a leader and sideman including “To Music”, “A View From Within” on WCS with the Jim Robitaille Group featuring NEA Jazz master Dave Liebman and the Jim Robitaille Trio “Space Cycles.” His latest release on the German label Dot Time records is with the duo Parallel East, called “Mantra”. His television and live performances include: The BET Jazz Channel, The Time Warner Music Choice Jazz Channel, PBS Television, The Baird Auditorium at the Smithsonian Institute's Museum of Natural History, Washington, D.C, The Bearsville Theatre, Woodstock, N.Y, The Deerhead Inn, Delaware Gap, PA, The Wang Center, Boston, MA, The Knitting Factory and Smoke in New York, and tours in the US, Canada, Europe, and the West Indies. Awards include The 9th Annual Thelonious Monk International Jazz Composers Competition, The 2002 Great American Song Contest First Place Instrumental Category, and The 2002 Great American Song Contest Outstanding Achievement in Songwriting Award, The 2011 Assets For Artists Grant, The Julius Hemphill Jazz Composers Alliance Competition, and The International Songwriting Contest. Jim is an international clinician, an applied jazz guitar instructor, small jazz ensemble, and guitar ensemble director, and founder and director of the Performance Jam Session Series on the Jazz Faculty at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
Evan Palmer (they/he) is an improviser, bassist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and educator based in Boston, Massachusetts. They specialize in avant-garde and improvised music.
Raised in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, Palmer moved to Boston in 2018 to attend Berklee College of Music, where they studied with John Lockwood, Francisco Mela, Bob Gullotti, Bruce Gertz, Bruno Räberg, and Linda May Han Oh. They graduated in 2022 with a Bachelor of Music in Bass Performance.
Palmer's music draws from a wide variety of influences. These include jazz, Latin, European classical, and folk, but with a focus on improvisation, avant-garde music and experimentation. Their music comes from a place of freedom and exploration, with a desire to create sounds that have never been heard before.
Palmer is a frequent feature of the New England improvised music and jazz scenes. They have performed and/or recorded as a sideperson with many artists including Francisco Mela, Tony Malaby, Phil Grenadier, Joel LaRue Smith, Shinya Lin, Jim Robitaille, and Leo Blanco. Palmer has also given performance and composition masterclasses with John Dalton's Spheres of Influence and the Jim Robitaille Group at UMass Dartmouth, Springfield College, and the West Medford Community Center. Palmer is also an up-and-coming bandleader, performing with their group all over the Northeast. They are currently an instructor of bass and oboe for the Hopkinton Music Association, Note-Worthy Experiences and Karen Amlaw Music.
We have no technical needs other than an outlet for guitar and bass amplifiers.
