Traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony
Overview
I perform chanoyu, traditional Japanese tea ceremony for a wide variety of events, both private or public. The ceremony runs anywhere from 30 - 90 min depending on number of guests, along with a brief introduction and philosophy of chanoyu.
** Travel over ten miles from Denver can be negotiated in quote!
WHAT IS JAPANESE TEA CEREMONY?
Here is a video showing a basic hakobe usucha ceremony - NOT tray tea, but a very good image of the concept and mood of a full ceremony. Of course, it's my goal to bring this IDEA and MOOD to YOUR event and adapt to your needs!

Aislynn gave a very detailed, enlightening, and interesting program, which was enjoyed by all. Some patrons noted how different the ceremony is from everyday, hectic, American life.

What to expect
I hope to give your event a truly unique experience by ensuring each ceremony I do is always different.
The type of tea served is matcha, which is a strong, powdered green tea. There is caffeine in matcha, but it should leave you feeling very awake and focused.
The style is Urasenke, ryakobon usucha, basic thin tea performed on a tray. Materials all supplied.
Guests can expect to have a brief discussion on Chanoyu with Q&A, then I will invite 1-4 guests to have tea in the traditional fashion. Before we begin, I will instruct the guests how to behave in the tearoom and how to drink their bowl of tea. During some part of the ceremony, guests should be silent and the atmosphere is fairly calm and meditative. Each guest will receive one sweet and one bowl of tea. After the ceremony is over, any other guests have the option to enjoy a sweet and have a bowl of matcha whisked for them!
It should be noted that even though some parts are silent, this event can easily be done in shifts and does not require everyone's attention if you have a large party. It is easily done in the background or in the spotlight. Basically, the level of casualness is flexible.
Options to enhance your experience:
- dressing full kimono is usually $50 more
- several "rounds" of participants can sit and have tea in the traditional manner as opposed to just 1-4. Additional time and cost can be negotiated.
