A sample reading, using three cards pulled from the Tarot of the Old Path:
First Card:
Four of Pentacles – The image on this card is of a merchant, well-dressed with plenty of jewelry, and a scowl on his face. He is clutching a pentacle disc to his chest, with another tucked in his arm, and the other two on a table, under his hand. There is a sense of stinginess, not wanting to share, and a fear of never having enough. This card speaks of the human nature to collect resources and the temptation to keep all the good things for one’s own benefit, and a distaste for giving away hand-outs. There are times when this is a necessary attitude, such as when we are being taken advantage of, or when one person has done all of the work but is facing others that believe they are entitled to the rewards. But this can also alienate you from people, and turn a person into an Ebenezer Scrooge type.
Second Card:
Nine of Cauldrons – The image on this card portrays two people, a man and a woman, in the middle of what looks to be a festive and rich dinner party. There is food everywhere, and all of the cups are full, except the one that has been knocked over in the excitement. The figures are plump and red-cheeked, suggesting a lifetime of full bellies and laughter. They are well-dressed as well, and it seems as though they could feast on everything in front of them on their own, but neither of them has a possessive stance on the food and drink, unlike the merchant in the first card. It’s clearly theirs, but this card embodies certain phrases such as “What’s mine is yours”, “Mi casa es su casa”, and of course, “Eat, drink, and be merry”. There is a sense of only being concerned with physical pleasures, like good food and drink. But what of the mind, and the spirit? What are we starving when we over-feed on physical pleasure?
Third Card:
• King of Pentacles – There is just one man on this card, holding a large pentacle disc in a protective yet not possessive manner. The look on his face is different from the merchant and the couple at the feast – where the merchant was miserly and the couple are cheery and maybe intoxicated, the king is peering into the distance, with a look that suggests a calm confidence. The king is the person that has achieved the balance between the first two cards. He sees the lines between managing resources properly and being a Scrooge, and between enjoying the good things in life and lacking discipline. He sees those lines and knows how to walk them with the courage necessary for a leader. There is also an image of a blooming foxglove plant behind him, and some of the things associated with this flower are pride, energy, intuition, ambition, creativity, confidence, productivity, co-operation, communication, and magic, all of which are ingredients necessary to crown a true king.
