The John Byrne Band
Overview
As well our original material, we play traditional Irish folk music. We are as at home playing in an intimate setting as we are in larger venues. We generally play as a 3/4 piece acoustic act with fiddle/cello, guitar, bodhran and banjo. We have toured the US and Europe and we have played with and opened up for acts as diverse as The Hothouse Flowers, Ian Gillan (of Deep Purple), Gaelic Storm, Black 47, and Patti Smyth, as well as performing with the Irish Tenors at the 2010 Liberty Medal Award Ceremony for President Clinton and Tony Blair. We also have many weddings and private events under our belt, we'd be delighted to play yours. Many thanks for your consideration.

March 10, 2023Thank you, John Bryne
John's performance was fabulous. For one hour he held the attention of our senior membership. John included a short history of Dublin, history of some unfamiliar song, and a few personnel comments. He embraced his audience and they responded.

October 15, 2020McElhone Wedding
We booked John Byrne for our outdoor wedding reception and we couldn't be more happy with how well it turned out. As soon as I got in contact with John, he was so accommodating and flexible with my requests. My husband's late father was an Irish musician so we wanted to have a few of his recordings for our first dance and mother-son dance. John graciously accepted to do this for us and set everything up on his own devices. It sounded perfect and meant so much to us.
As for the band's performance, we were blown away. We had watched many of the their YouTube videos and were already impressed, but they were even better in person. All the guests kept coming up to me to tell me how much they enjoyed the music. There was lots of dancing as well, which I was so happy and surprised to see.
If you're looking for a truly authentic Irish sound, John Bryne is your man. Having lived in Ireland for 10 years, I can certainly attest to this. My husband, who's father was the late Oliver McElhone, is terribly picky when it comes to Irish musicians. I was so shocked to hear him whisper to me during dinner how great the band was. This was a big win for me!!
We had so many guests tell us it was the best wedding they have attended and I know the music had so much to do with that. Thank you so much to John Bryne and his band for making our day so special.

The John Byrne Band is led by Dublin native, and former Patrick's Head front man, John Byrne. Following the release of their critically acclaimed album, After the Wake, in 2010, the band embarked on multiple tours of the US and Ireland/UK. Some reviews of our album, After the Wake, include the following:
“Up and coming Trad star hits the sweet spot… beautifully played… its Byrne’s natural vocal delivery that makes the album stand out from the crowd” Hot Press
“John Byrne’s After The Wake is the sort of album that an artist spends their entire career trying to create. Every once in a while someone actually manages to do it; mix splendid story-telling skills, top-notch musicianship, and a grand creative sense with just the right mix of songs. After The Wake is nothing short of a brilliant collection” – Wildy’s World
“One of the few musical artists today who truly manage to be traditional and modern at the same time.” Philadelphia Inquirer
“He’s good, period, with material that’s edgy yet accessible in a Luka Bloom meets Bob Dylan kind of way.” Philadelphia Daily News
“After the Wake is the perfect combination of Celtic and American folk music.”
Record-Journal Newspaper
“Amazing tales of life and semi-autobiographical tunes… You’ll want to listen over and over again.”
Reviewer Magazine“
Byrne’s songs are rich with the sounds and themes of Irish tradition, one that survives in a modern world… full of “raw strength”… an impressive work throughout… puts me in mind of an Irish Alejandro Escavedo” Sing Out Magazine
For “fans of Celtic music, Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams and other such lyrically expansive folks.” Sun Herald
“Vocals delivered with the utmost sincerity and music that follows suit” – Catherine L. Tully – Celtic MP3s Music Magazine
“Folk music, all the way through, and at its very best……traditional sounding original songs, each one as amazing as the one before. I tell you frankly that I wept salty tears, brought on by both the subject matter of the lyrics and the intensity of the delivery.” Album Review – Celtophilia.
We can also provide a sound system that will cover a medium sized room and bring an engineer with us who can operate any sound system that a venue might have or require. Having traveled the entire country, we are also more than willing to travel for your event.
