The Hops & Honey String Band
Overview
The Hops & Honey String Band brews up an intoxicating blend of ragtime, early jazz, and country blues music from the 1920s and 1930s.
Audiences of all ages enjoy the authentic string band sound, which includes spirited vocals, fiddle, trumpet, string bass, fingerstyle guitar, and rustic percussion. The band brings the true spirit of the old songs to life; a performance by The Hops & Honey String Band is like travelling back to a different time and place.
“The melodies are catchy, and the lyrics often humorous,” comments guitarist Andrew Yeomans. “We’re serious about doing justice to the music, but it’s not often serious music; most of it is just the party music of those days.”

What to expect
The Hops & Honey String Band brews up an intoxicating blend of ragtime, early jazz, and country blues music from the 1920s and ‘30s.
Audiences of all ages enjoy the authentic string band sound, which includes spirited vocals, fiddle, trumpet, string bass, fingerstyle guitar, and rustic percussion. The band brings the true spirit of the old songs to life.
With a songlist covering such diverse artists as Frank Stokes, Rosa Henderson, Bo Carter, Sweet Emma Barrett, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Bessie Smith and Mance Lipscomb, a performance by The Hops & Honey String Band is like travelling back to a different time and place.
Unrequited love, money troubles, and dust-ups with the law are not new to pop music. Hops & Honey audiences gain a deeper appreciation of the roots of today’s popular music; and they find that the human foibles chronicled in the old songs have not changed much in the last 80 years.
These are songs of everyday life, songs that you would have heard on the back porch, at the roadhouse, at a Saturday night fish-fry, or a weekend picnic.
“The melodies are catchy, and often the lyrics are funny double-entendres,” comments guitarist Andrew Yeomans. “We’re serious about doing justice to the music, but it’s not always serious music; a lot of it is just the party music of those days.”
In addition to the guitar stylings of Yeomans, the band features vocalist, fiddler, and instrument-maker Anna Sandys, the magic-bass-man Ben Sandler, cornetist Dave Duffield, and vocalist/percussionist Tim Ennis.
Our shows are pleasantly interactive with humorous stories and banter. This is music we love, and we love to share it with with our audiences.
