The Crones
Overview
The Crones bring Colorado bluegrass to life with tight vocal harmonies, high-energy fiddle tunes, and an Americana twist that gets people moving. The name is a reclamation, proudly owning the power and wisdom that comes with being older women. This Boulder-based trio (Tina Dozauer on vocals and guitar, Laima Haley on vocals and fiddle, and Roz Weller on upright bass) draws on roots in classical training, Eastern European folk, and Nashville honky-tonks to deliver a sound that's traditional, contemporary, and completely their own. Whether you're a lifelong bluegrass fan or hearing it for the first time, The Crones will have you smiling by the first song.

What to expect
Hire The Crones and you get three seasoned musicians who show up on time, set up without fuss, and fill the room with warm, acoustic sound from the first note. No drama, no complicated tech requirements — just great music and happy guests.
The sound: Tight three-part vocal harmonies anchored by guitar, fiddle, and upright bass. The repertoire spans traditional and contemporary bluegrass, Americana, and classic country — recognizable enough to draw people in, soulful enough to hold them there. Expect foot-tapping fiddle tunes woven between heartfelt songs. The vibe is joyful and a little rootsy, appealing to a wide range of ages.
The format: Two 45-minute sets with a short break, though the trio is happy to adjust length to fit your event timeline. Volume is naturally acoustic — conversational in quieter spaces, lively without being overwhelming. Perfect background music that doesn't stay in the background for long.
The logistics: Fully acoustic and self-contained. For smaller venues and outdoor markets, The Crones can provide their own amplification — just ask. For larger venues with a house sound system, they need 2 vocal mic channels and 3 instrument channels (guitar, fiddle, upright bass). Load-in is simple and quick.
The fit: Farmers markets, cideries, breweries, private parties, weddings, fundraisers, church events, outdoor festivals — The Crones have played them all across the Colorado Front Range. They read the room well and can dial the energy up or down depending on the occasion.
The people: Tina Dozauer trained in classical voice at Oberlin before falling in love with bluegrass. Laima Haley brings fiddle chops rooted in Eastern European folk and modal bluegrass. Roz Weller spent her graduate school years steps from Nashville's legendary Station Inn. Three very different musical roads that converge into one cohesive, joyful sound.
About
Tina Dozauer (guitar, vocals)
Tina grew up on a farm in southern Iowa, where she cultivated a love of animals, gardening, and music. She studied classical voice at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music (Rhiannon Giddens’s alma mater!) and CU Boulder and later discovered bluegrass at a music camp she attended with her son. She has been teaching music in the Boulder Valley Schools for the past 28 years. Tina keeps a collection of odd rescue liquors that friends regretted buying, such as vanilla vodka and butterscotch schnapps.
Laima Haley (fiddle, vocals)
Laima is a versatile fiddler and singer who loves many different genres of music. Originally starting as a Suzuki violin tot chasing NYSMA medals, over the years she discovered her deepest passions were for Eastern European music and modal Bluegrass. She also performs with groups such as Planina, Songs of Eastern Europe, the Rusty Gears and the Spurs of the Moment. Laima is a big fan of tasty NA brews.
Roz Weller (upright bass)
Roz was introduced to bluegrass at Penn State, where she learned upright bass to jam at bluegrass festivals in the area. At graduate school in Nashville, she lived close to the Station Inn, where she was a regular. In Colorado, Roz played with Orchard Creek Band for several years before joining The Crones. She also plays with Smorgasgrass and runs a couple of open bluegrass jams. Roz stockpiles holiday IPAs.
Additional booking notes
Instrumentation: Acoustic guitar, fiddle, upright bass and vocals — no electric instruments.
For small venues & outdoor markets (no house sound): The Crones can provide their own PA system at no extra charge. Just let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly. We need access to one standard electrical outlet.
For venues with house sound: We require 5 channels total:
- 2 vocal microphone channels (for Tina and Laima)
- 3 additional instrument XLR channels (fiddle, guitar and bass)
A monitor mix with all three vocals and instruments is appreciated but not required.
Staging: A flat performance area of at least 8' x 8' is ideal. No riser required. The trio performs standing or on stools — no drum kit, no backline needed.
Lighting: Standard stage or event lighting is fine. No special lighting requirements.
Outdoor performances: We love playing outside! A few things that make it work well for everyone:
- Shade or a canopy is required for outdoor daytime performances — direct sun is hard on both the musicians and the instruments, and heat can cause acoustic instruments to go out of tune quickly.
- A dry, level surface is required. Grass is fine when it's dry and even; please ensure the performance area drains well and is not prone to pooling water. Wet conditions are dangerous for equipment and instruments.
- In the event of rain or severe weather, the client is responsible for providing covered shelter or rescheduling. We're flexible and easy to work with — just don't ask us to play through a thunderstorm!
Load-in: Light and fast! Three musicians, acoustic instruments, and a small PA if needed. Allow 60 minutes for setup and a brief soundcheck.
Power: One standard 120V outlet (for PA, when provided by the band).
Parking: Two vehicles near the load-in entrance is appreciated.

Influences and inspiration
The Crones draw from a deep well. On the traditional side: the Carter Family, Bill Monroe, and the old-time fiddle tradition of the Southern Appalachians. On the contemporary side: Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Alison Krauss, and the Del McCoury Band. Rhiannon Giddens is a touchstone for how rooted music can be both deeply traditional and completely alive.
For songs, John Prine is a constant presence, as is Dolly Parton. Both are writers who make simple language feel profound. Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard showed that women's voices belong at the center of bluegrass, not the edges.
The fiddle repertoire leans toward the modal and the modal-adjacent: Vassar Clements, Richard Greene, and the New Grass Revival opened up what bluegrass fiddle could be. Natalie MacMaster and Darol Anger are in there too.
And underneath it all, the jammers and pickers at Boulder-area bluegrass jams, the community that brought these three together in the first place.
