About
Tate Kamakea Chu is a soprano from San Diego, California, praised for her golden, bell-like tone and convincing dramatic portrayals. In 2026, Mrs. Chu will be taking on her role debut of Violetta (La Traviata) with Amici Opera. Past roles include Suor Angelica (Suor Angelica) with Berlin Opernfest, Rusalka (Rusalka) with LAH-SOW, Musetta (La Bohème) with Opera New York, Gilda (Rigoletto) with Regina Opera, Diana (Orpheus in the Underworld) with the Manhattan School of Music, Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi) with The Opera Co, and Alice Ford (The Merry Wives of Windsor) with the CSU Fullerton School of Music.
In 2025, Tate won Second Place in the London Classical Music Competition and made her Soloist Debut at Carnegie Hall as a Vocal Mentor for the National Children’s Chorus.
Passionate about creating performance opportunities for her peers, Tate produces fully staged operatic performances by composers such as Puccini, Bizet, Menotti, Strauss II, and other musical genres including musical theater and cabaret. In 2022, she was awarded a generous grant from New York City Artist Corps. As a result of this honor, she created and performed a sold-out recital celebrating opera and musical theater at Don’t Tell Mama NYC with Amici Opera Co.
She holds a Professional Studies Certificate and a Master’s degree in Classical Voice from the Manhattan School of Music. There, she was an active member of the Graduate Opera Theatre, where she worked with Maestro George Manahan and Kenneth Merrill, as well as MSM’s Advanced Vocal Workshop directed by Dona Vaughn. Mrs. Chu also graduated from the California State University Fullerton School of Music with a bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance. She has participated in masterclasses with Lisette Oropesa, Rachel Willis-Sørensen, and Renee Tatum.
