December 29, 2017Shirlee Smith gave three dynamic, informative, humorous, interesting and engaging presentations.
Her first presentation was focused on
parents and parenting. The parents came away feeling enlightened and emboldened and commented that Shirlee was "down to earth, funny, and a fantastic presenter"
From the success of the presentation to the parents Shirlee was invited to present to Marlton's staff. Many similar responses were elicited with the added commentary that she was inspiring and extremely motivational and was she available to present to the students on Career Day.
Shirlee came on Career Day and through an interpreted interview was equally as dynamic and engaging with the high school students as she had been with their parents and their staff educators!

December 20, 2017In 2016 Shirlee Smith spoke at a luncheon forum held by the CLaremont Democratic Club. I don't remember the lunch at all, but the speaker was splendid. We were all influenced by what she had to say. It changed the way we saw the world.

interest in a side of the world they weren't familiar with. I believe we all benefitted from the presentation as the questions were invigorating and brought me to enhance my presentation incorporating the questions for all up-coming engagements asking for the same topic. I grew up in Los Angeles, California. Went to public schools and married soon after HS graduation. Had 6 children and 2 husbands - both marriages ended in divorce and I became a single parent. Was recruited in 1968 for a program at UCLA. I graduated as an honor student -Departmental Scholar in sociology and the biggest lesson learned was the influence parents have on their children. Mine became scholarly as they saw me pouring over my books along with them while they were doing their own homework. From that experience, I became committed to helping parents do a better job. I founded a non-profit organization and one of the programs I created was "Mothers Behind Bars - the parent puzzle." I developed workshops and recruited presenters to cover a series of topics designed specifically for inmate mothers who were not with their children. As a newspaper columnist (40 years) and cable program producer (20 years) I have amassed a wide range of contacts and resources that are the tools needed by adults to assist children in becoming their best. My commitment is to share these contacts and resources.
