David Smith, also known by the pseudonym “spicello,” was born July 22nd, 1987 in Logan County, West Virginia. At 6 months old, Mr. Smith moved to Richmond, VA, and was raised and eventually began his musical pursuit. Mr. Smith was first introduced to string instruments and classical music at the age of 9, when a string quartet from the Richmond Symphony Orchestra came to perform a concert in order to encourage the idea of a strings program in the local area public schools. After 2 very unsuccessful years as a violinist, Mr. Smith was politely encouraged to switch to the violoncello in middle school.
Aside from the very basic of fundamentals, Mr. Smith was self taught until college, where he studied with cellists such as Neal Cary, Jason McComb, Tanya Anisimova, and Allen Nisbet. Mr. Smith attended the Appomattox Regional Governer's School for Arts and Technology, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Loyola University New Orleans for BFAs in both cello performance and music theory.
After a hiatus pursuing an ultimately unfulfilling career as a chef, Mr. Smith returned to New Orleans in 2017 to embrace once again a pursuit of a lifelong dream as a professional musician. Mr. Smith also began composing during this time, and completed his first major work, Sonata for cello and piano, “Relict's Passage,” in November of 2020. In addition to several smaller works, Mr. Smith subsequently began a Suite for Solo Cello, and is also currently composing his first cello concerto.
Mr. Smith currently resides in New Orleans, LA, where he is the cellist of the Prytania String Quartet, principal cellist of the New Orleans Civic Symphony, and teaches privately.
