About
Naomie “Ngozi” Grandison, is a vibrant, inspirational and dynamic singer, songwriter, musician, motivational speaker and registered nurse, who was born on the 28th of November, in the historic, scenic and tranquil town of Soufriere, St. Lucia in the Caribbean. Growing up in this place with its lush flora, indigenous fauna, beaches, Sulphur Springs, pitons, and drive-in volcano, allowed “Ngozi” a free life where her grandmother would take her on long walks through the countryside near rivers. She would frolic by the beach which was mere seconds away in this “threat-free”, “didn’t-have-to-lock-your-doors”, town, where everyone felt like a member of the community. This was definitely a catalyst for firstly, getting “Ngozi” to indulge in her singing talent (as she would do it randomly on her jaunts); secondly, exercising her creativity and self-expression (as she would be able to express spiritual things and her thoughts on matter of importance to her in a different, more spiritual and more passionate way than others normally would by the use of her words); and thirdly, develop and indulge in the art of self-reflection which is evident in her music as it shows a great depth of connection with God, nature, self, life, people and emotion which could only have been done through much introspection. This is attested too, by the genres and caliber of music which she writes and sings; as well as by her chosen stage name, “Ngozi”, which she not only chose because it means “blessings”, but also because it represented what her music stood for, her affinity to Afrocentricity, and the “Ng” represents the initials of her name.
“Ngozi” has won several awards for her music. They include: the Ministry of Education and the National Youth Council ‘Esteem Award’ in youth development for the “I am Beautiful” campaign in 2012; Inter-Commercial Calypso queen in 2014; ‘Award of Excellence’ from the Soufriere Foundation in 2014; ‘Ministry of Health Award’ for calypsonians who wrote songs promoting health while discouraging negative health practices and abuse in 2015; and the ‘Akademia Award’ for best pop reggae for “My Breeze” in 2016. This award-rendering organization recognizes artistes from across the globe, who are just breaking unto the music scene. They even recognize those who use social media as a platform, such as “Ngozi”. They are located on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles; in Rockefeller plaza in New York; on Marriott Drive in Nashville; and Regent Street in London.
