F.A.Q (Frequently Asked Questions)
1-What is henna made of? Henna is made from the crushed up, dried leaves of the henna plant (Lawsonia Inermis). These leaves are then sifted to remove debris and then henna is mixed with lemon juice and/or water, sugar, and a mixture of safe essential oils.
2-What is black henna? Do you use black henna? Natural henna never stains black. In the photos, the henna may appear black- this is because the paste is still on the skin. The paste, when dry is a blackish-green color. Unfortunately, some artists use henna that stains your skin black. The substance they are using is usually henna that has been mixed with with harmful chemicals such as PPD (para-phenylenediamine). This substance will dye the skin jet black in as quickly as 20 minutes, however PPD is a known carcinogen and can be quite harmful cause burning, rashes, scarring, and/or blood poisoning. SMHENNADESIGNS NEVER uses black henna.
3-Should I exfoliate first? Henna paste releases its dye that is absorbed by the top layer of skin cells. Henna is NOT absorbed into the bloodstream and only stains the layers of skin. So if you exfoliate right before having henna applied, henna may not have enough layers to be absorbed into and might not result in a preferred stain. Therefore it is recommended to do shaving, waxing, etc. a day or 2 before getting your henna applied.
4-What’s the best body part to get henna applied? Henna stains best on thicker parts of the skin such as the palms of your hand and soles of your feet. Henna will stain other parts of the body such as arms and legs but the stain wont be as dark. Skin on the face/neck may not take the henna stain, as body oils may hinder absorption.
What is "Black Henna"?
Natural henna never stains black. In the photos, the henna may appear blackish- this is because the paste is still on the skin. But when it is dry it is a greenish color. The substance used in black henna is PPD (para-phenylenediamine) which is used in hair dye. This substance will dye the skin jet black in as quickly as 20 minutes. Black Hair Dye is illegal to put on skin, because that is not an approved use. Even when this dye is applied to hair, people must wear gloves, and try not to get it on the scalp! Many people get itching, blistering and hair loss from using black hair dye. It can be quite harmful cause burning, rashes, scarring, and/or blood poisoning.
Para-phenylenediamine is a strong sensitizer, transdermal toxin (it penetrates your skin, then travels through your blood stream and causes damage) and potential carcinogen.
