Overview

Liquid Nitrogen Science Event-- Learn about the properties of atoms in the world around us. What happens when things get really, really cold? How about 300 degrees below zero? Help make creamy LN2 ice cream, see flowers that shatter like glass, and ponder the mystery of the unbreakable penny. Science Guy can answer any question! Add in shrinking balloons, liquid air, frozen shattering balls, and floating superconductors... there's something for everyone in this very cool event!

Amazing!!

As a non profit getting the necessary documentation is super important for us. They were so helpful and willing to work with us on anything we needed to make the event perfect. All of the kids loved the demos and I could see that your presentation really sparked a new interest for some of our kiddos. We will 100% be inviting the science guy back for a future event!

What to expect

Science Guy engages the audience at the level of their understanding, from elementary, to middle school, high school and adults. His show is always relevant and engaging at an appropriate level. He's even performed by request before other scientists with rave reviews.

He has a table set up with two dewars of extremely cold liquid nitrogen, 300 degrees below zero. He explains the Leidenfrost effect that protects him as he works. He demonstrates the Leidenfrost effect on a dish as liquid nitrogen skitters around the relatively hot room temperature dish on miniature cushions of air. These cushions protect him from freezing if a drop hits his skin. He gives examples of how liquid nitrogen is typically used, wart removal, welding, scientific research, etc.

How does liquid nitrogen or extreme cold effect common objects around us? He has volunteers stand in a small square marked on the floor. They wiggle and jostle as they are instructed that molecules do as heat increases. Finally they are unable to remain in the square and they evaporate! This provides rudimentary molecular understanding for the rest of the exploration. Roses are frozen and clapped into powder by a volunteer, two pennies are frozen, two volunteers are chosen to hit them with hammers, one succeeds, one doesn't, why? The answer will surprise you. An enormous balloon is blown up and tied, what will happen? It shrinks to nothing before our eyes in the cold. There is a lot of showmanship mixed with interesting science that is entertaining and memorable. He ends his show with a shattered rubber ball and up to three batches of ice cream, frozen almost instantly. A variety of flavors can be made in minutes, with volunteers stirring and vapor pouring out in every direction. Liquid nitrogen is odorless, harmless when warmed (since it's actually 78 percent of what we breathe in Earth's atmosphere. Best part is it makes fantastic creamy ice cream. Fresh squeezed strawberry, fresh squeezed blackberry, cookies and cream, white chocolate raspberry swirl, coconut cream, and peanut butter mood are some of our favorites. The perfect end to a great show.

About

Troy is a Physicist who used to work at HRL laboratory in CA where they had liquid nitrogen in a faucet for their experiments. This led to his love for LN2 ice cream and the creation of the various science demos we've put on for birthdays and events for more than 20 years. Science is very cool! Troy currently works as a Space Defense Physicist for MITRE, working closely with Space Force in Colorado Springs - - but he still loves ice cream and a good show!

Additional booking notes

My college Physics professor who ate LN2 crackers and blew liquid nitrogen vapor from his nose like a fire breathing dragon. Best professor ever!
