About

Recently endorsed by Canopus drums and Bosphorus cymbals Rodrigo Bonelli’s most recent album, “Brooklyn Sessions” was considered for a Grammy nomination in the “Latin Jazz” category in 2021. This collaborative album from his instrumental group, Brasil Trio +1, features original compositions in a variety of Brazilian styles.

Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Rodrigo Bonelli relocated to the United States at an early age to further his musical studies. After working as a freelance musician in New England for several years, Rodrigo moved to New York City where he currently resides.

His latest modern jazz album, Septet Works, features pianist Don Friedman and trumpet player Mike Rodriguez. All seven compositions were written and arranged for four horns by Mr. Bonelli. The album is currently playing on local jazz stations throughout the East Coast, as well as on BreakThru radio’s “The Jazz Hole Live.”

Known for his impeccable groove, sophisticated taste, and stylistic versatility, Rodrigo maintains a busy performing and recording schedule throughout NYC and the United States. He has been privileged to perform with such renowned musicians as Don Friedman, Ron McClure, George Garzone, and Claudio Roditi. Rodrigo’s drumming can be heard on the JazzIz 2010 CD entitled Signs of the Times, as well as on the Two World’s quartet album Stream of Stars.
Rodrigo's compositions have been featured on the Brazilian program “Manhattan Connection,” airing on the GNT channel in Brazil. In 2013, his composition “Ups and Downs” was a finalist in the Jazz category of the USA Songwriting Competition, an international contest. He has performed extensively in The United States, Brazil, Scotland, Germany and Switzerland. In 2022 Mr. Bonelli became a voting member of the recording academy.
