What to Expect
With me, you will be getting the very highest level of expertise. I play some of the most difficult music that exists for guitar, but you would never know it because of the ease and mastery with which it is played. This music is wonderful. It is elegant, sensual, heart warming, and flat out amazing!
Whether you are looking for background music or a featured performance, your guests will be talking about the music afterward. It happens at every gig I do. I really am that good. I work extremely hard at my craft and have done so for many years. You may find a cheaper musician than me, but remember, you will get what you pay for.
I play solo Classical/Spanish guitar. The music is elegant, exciting, expressive, and impressive. I hold a Masters Degree in guitar and have been playing for over 30 years. I am a pro. I play with a lot of passion, yet remain within the confines of the situation (if necessary) and respect the wishes of my clients above all else. I always appear neat and wear a nice black suit to my gigs unless asked to do otherwise.
I am happy to play in front of 10,000 people or 10. I also have a PA system which I can bring if needed. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, would like a song list, or would like to hear some samples of my music. If you would like to know more about my background, keep reading. If not, have a terrific day!
Richard Dawson holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Guitar Performance and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Musical Arts Performance from the world renowned California Institute of the Arts. He was one of two applicants accepted into the guitar department in 1995 and one of three to graduate in 2003.
Mr. Dawson studied with world class guitarists Stuart Fox, Miroslav Tadic, and Dr. John Schneider. Through intensive study, he has become a master of the Romero Method. This method is an in depth exploration of the mechanics of the hands, body, and mind in relation to the techniques used to play classical guitar. Once mastered, this set of tools allows the user to effectively learn ANY style of guitar with relative ease. Richard’s mentor, Stuart Fox, studied directly under Pepe and Angel Romero during his studies at USC.
Richard is a true master of the guitar in every respect. He has tackled some of the most difficult guitar literature and interprets many of the classics with a very unique and exquisitely beautiful sensitivity unheard of until now.
In addition to his mastery of classical guitar, Mr. Dawson is a virtuoso on the electric guitar. He has developed a very unique approach to improvisation which allows the player to effectively participate with any style of music.
Richard headed the guitar and bass department for the California Summer School for the Arts (InnerSpark), from 2000 through 2005. In addition, he has been teaching privately since 1990. Many of his students have gone on to some of the top music schools in the world including : Cal Arts, USC, UCLA, the San Francisco Conservatory, the New England Conservatory, and many others.
Currently, Mr. Dawson teaches privately in the greater Los Angeles area and is accepting new students.
Richard’s debut album became available for purchase in January of 2014. He will be performing many concerts in the coming year in support of the album and would love to see you there.
Additional Booking Notes
For most situations, a condenser microphone and PA system are best. I have this equipment available for an additional fee of $50 if needed. For small rooms or featured performances, microphones may not be necessary. Wet environments are not conducive to classical guitar. In other words, if it is raining, I must have a space where I can remain completely dry. Water is really bad for the instrument as well as the electronics (PA system, etc). That being said, I have played at a few events where it rained unexpectedly and we were always able to figure something out.
One hour and 30 minutes of music with an additional 30 minutes of site read music of short Baroque, Renaissance, and Classical pieces. I have another hour of music memorized if necessary.
