About
Phil Gammage’s style of roots and blues influenced music has been compared to everyone from Roy Orbison to Johnny Cash to Tom Waits — or as the Trouser Press once wrote about Phil’s music
“…underwrought dark side Americana echoing Nick Cave’s fascinations minus the melodrama. Which might well make Gammage this generation’s Hank Williams.”
Trouser Press
Nine solo albums and numerous songs featured in television shows and commercials have earned Phil a growing following and a steady hum of praise. His new album "It's All Real Good" features nine of Phil’s song compositions and has received great reviews and radio airplay internationally. As on all of his recordings, it features Phil singing, playing guitar, and playing the harmonica.
"It's All Real Good" is a follow-up to 2016’s "Used Man For Sale" (PreFab International Records), an album of outstanding Gammage penned songs. It received numerous rave reviews and made numerous ‘Best of the year’ lists.
Robert Ross, from Popdose wrote about his 2015 album "Adventures in Bluesland" “…a great/pleasant surprise. Adventures In Bluesland is not so much an adventure but a pleasurable listening trip.”
And Iman Lababedi at Rock NYC and Recorded wrote “This is pure artistry and alive pop art: it covers the bases. And it is New York, watching the traffic flow in a true blues greatness.”
Originally from Houston, Texas, Phil released two acclaimed solo albums Night Train and Kneel to the Rising Sun in the 1990’s on France’s influential New Rose Records (Alex Chilton, Gun Club, Alejandro Escovedo, The Replacements, Calvin Russell). In the years before the music genre term, “Americana” was even being used, these albums explored the blues, country, and folk music genres. By paying tribute to these styles through his own songwriting, Gammage gave the music a fresh and unique sound. Subsequent albums appeared on American and European labels into the 2000’s including the critically acclaimed Cry of the City on Alive Natural/Marilyn Records (The Black Keys, Left Lane Cruiser).
Phil returned to recording in 2014 with his stellar Adventures in Bluesland album. Later that same year, a collaboration with poet/activist/American folk hero John Sinclair resulted in the album Keeping the Blues Alive with tracks recorded live at a memorable Brooklyn show. 2015 saw Phil record and release with his large band Adventures in Bluesland (same name as his solo album) the essential The American Dream which features nine songs written by Phil. The album was released to much critical acclaim in addition to receiving international radio airplay. Currently, he performs solo, with a small combo, or with a full band.
In addition to his songwriting and performing roots music, Phil is an in-demand blues/rock guitarist and harmonica player. He toured Europe with rock band Certain General in the spring of 2016 and has performed several times at the CBGB Music Festival in New York. In recent years he's also performed and the Lancaster (Pennsylvania) Roots and Blues Festival, Porchstomp! Festival, and the BluesCraft Winter and Summer Festivals. His solo tour of Europe in 2018 brought him new fans and accolades for his songs and concerts.
Phil Gammage is the consummate live performer, lyricist, singer, guitarist, and harmonica player who brings a unique depth and drama to music.
