What to expect
They can expect a pretty mellow performance, one with passion and feeling. If you want me to croon jazz tunes, one can expect that. If one wants me to deliver pop or country or top 40 radio hits, I can do that as well. Mellow and laidback music. Music with a message. Musical integrity and musical meaning is what I am mostly all about!
About
Paul Michell is a singer/songwriter in his mid twenties hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota. After years of classical piano training, Paul decided to start writing songs for the pure thrill and satisfaction it brought him. "A lot of my really early work back when I was like 18, well...it was pretty embarrassing stuff. I had a lot of encouragement from my family, close friends and my piano teacher of over 10 years to keep writing and writing."
Years of writing were documented in the release of his EP, 'Wake Me Up', which features pop/rock production from Producer Cole John Hooey. Paul remembers driving up to Fargo with laryngitis to record scratch vocals and piano with the official vocals being tracked in his parent's basement in Chanhassen in the winter of 2011. According to Paul, "A lot of the material were the ones I felt strongly about. It was my first time doing a "produced" album, so to speak." Being a perfectionist at heart, Paul recalls it being a wonderful experience and the joy of recording music kept him wanting to do it more.
He was contacted to contribute backing vocals and keys to fellow artist, Stacy Lee on her album "Face the Day".
"Now THAT was an amazing experience. I played with some great artists on that record...Steve Goold [drummer for Sara Bareilles and Owl City], Al Bergstrom, Michael Haldorson...it was also great working with Producer Owen Sartori."
He co-wrote two tracks on Stacy Lee's album- 'Carry Me Over' and 'A Beautiful Simplicity'. He says, "Co-writing truly brings me out of my comfort zone. Being part of an amazing project was an experience I'll never forget."
In the spring of 2013, Paul was a passenger in a near fatal car accident which resulted in the cancellation of shows and recording new material. "I was kind of on a roll I guess. I was playing monthly prior to the accident... sometimes weekly, holding down a couple jobs and trying to finish my college degree...life kind of came to a halt for a second and it really opened my eyes to what mattered in my life: the people I hold dear and the songs in my heart."
Paul looks forward to releasing a new single this coming October, with production by Owen Sartori entitled 'Breathing Underwater'. This marks new sonic territory for Paul. "It's definitely catchy. It's hopeful. It's upbeat. It marks where I am at in my life right now as a twenty-something year old. I think we young people are always looking for answers. We question the beliefs and ideals we were raised on and I've come to realize it's okay to not have all the answers as cliche as it sounds. I think I'm writing my best work yet. Sometimes it takes a non-ideal situation to wake you up."
Paul has performed at Amsterdam Bar and Hall, Fine Line Music Cafe, Honey, and O'Gara's, as well as Live from Studio 5 at KFAI, just to name a few. He has performed shows with the likes of Stacy Lee, The Reckless, Courtney Yasmineh, Minnesota Music Award winning percussionist, Lady Tobalyas, and New York based artist, Alyssa Graham.
Paul released his new single 'BREATHING UNDERWATER' on all digital outlets on 10.1.13 and plans on releasing a full length album in 2014.
